This Week at Pepperdine: January 20-26

MALIBU, Calif. - The women's basketball and men's tennis teams are home this weekend, while the men's volleyball team will look to hold onto its newly acquired #1 ranking with two road matches, and the men's basketball team returns to Northern California.

Kelsey Brockway and Ea Shoushtari of the women's basketball team open the show, and interviews take place with AVCA National Player of the Week Parker Kalmbach (men's volleyball), Stacy Davis (men's basketball) and Tessa Emerson (women's basketball).

Here's a look at the week's events:


Thursday: at Saint Mary's (Moraga, Calif.), 7 p.m.
Saturday: at Pacific (Stockton, Calif.), 7 p.m.

Pepperdine heads to Northern California for the second time in four weekends looking for a victory that will give the Waves their best win total since 2004-05. At 12-8 overall and 5-3 in the WCC (tied for fourth place), the Waves have already matched their best victory totals in the last nine seasons. Pepperdine is looking for its first win against Saint Mary's in a while, while this will be the first WCC matchup between the Waves and Pacific since 1971. On Saturday, Lamond Murray Jr. scored a career-high 16 points and helped the Waves to a second-half comeback victory over Portland.


Thursday: vs. Portland (Firestone Fieldhouse), 7 p.m.
Saturday: vs. Gonzaga (Firestone Fieldhouse), 2 p.m.
Tickets: Tickets for home games cost $8 for adults and $5 for alumni, children, seniors and students. Tickets are free for Pepperdine students, faculty and staff with a valid Pepperdine ID.

Promotions: The first 100 students will receive a rally towel at Thursday's Portland game. On Saturday following the Gonzaga game, Willie the Wave will be hosting a postgame carnival for kids of all ages. There will be a bounce house, carnival games, face painting and autographs with the women's team.

The Waves return home after a two-game Northern California road swing, giving fans two chances to catch the team in action at Firestone Fieldhouse against Portland and #22 Gonzaga. The Waves are looking to get healthy after being down to just seven players in the rotation last week. Ea Shoushtari also looks to continue to step up her game in an increased role for the Waves after putting up 18 points and nine rebounds the last time out.


Wednesday: at Cal State Northridge (Northridge, Calif.), 7 p.m. Friday: at Long Beach State (Long Beach, Calif.), 7 p.m.

Pepperdine, newly minted as the #1 team in the nation in both the AVCA and Volleyball Magazine rankings, travels to both Cal State Northridge and #5 Long Beach State for MPSF matches this week. The Waves will be looking to defend their unblemished record and get their first win in Northridge since the 2011 season. In addition to owning the top spot in the rankings, Pepperdine also boasts the reigning AVCA National Player of the Week in Parker Kalmbach. Kalmbach earned his first career triple-double with 11 kills, a career-high 13 digs and 10 blocks last week at USC. It was just the fourth triple-double by any MPSF player since 2007. The Waves will also have to contend with the 49ers, who will be playing inside the Walter Pyramid for the first time in 2014 after opening the season on the road with a 3-2 record.

The #13 Pepperdine men's tennis team opens the 2014 dual campaign on Tuesday at #37 Washington. The match will be contested indoors. The Waves move outdoors this Friday and Saturday when they host the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, welcoming in #40 San Diego, #33 Alabama and #17 California. Friday's schedule includes the Waves and Toreros squaring off, followed by the Crimson Tide and Golden Bears. Winners of both duals will square off at 1 p.m. on Saturday with the champion moving on to the ITA National Indoor Championship on Feb. 14-17 in Houston, Texas. The Waves' young squad includes four returning letterwinners that helped Pepperdine reach the quarterfinals of the 2013 NCAA Tournament and eight newcomers.


Saturday: Alumni Game (Eddy D. Field Stadium), 1 p.m.

The Pepperdine baseball team will put on its first show for the fans in 2014 on Saturday afternoon when the Waves host their annual Alumni Game.
