Waves Drop Series Opener to LMU 4-3

LOS ANGELES, California – The Pepperdine baseball team couldn't complete a comeback in its West Coast Conference series opener falling 4-3 to Loyola Marymount on Friday night at Page Stadium.
 
Even though the Waves (20-24, 8-14 WCC) outhit the Lions (18-27-1, 13-9 WCC) 11 to six, it wasn't enough to collect the win.
 
BIG WAVES
 
  • Sophomore infielder John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) went 2-for-3 on the night with one RBI and a walk. Peck is currently on a seven-game hitting streak and a nine-game reached base streak.
  • Sophomore outfielder Charles Masino (Newbury Park, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) went 2-for-5 with one RBI.
  • Redshirt junior outfielder Michael Winaker Walnut Creek, Calif./San Ramon HS) tied his career-high for hits with two.
  • Freshman designated hitter Devon Walczykowski (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Jesuit HS) went 2-for-4 including his third career home run. Walczykowski touched home plate twice.
  • Senior infielder Greg Mehlhaff (Gresham, Ore./Clackamas HS) also had two hits on the night and crossed the plate once.
 
GAME RECAP
 
In the bottom of the second inning, the Lions took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run to right field. In the top of the fifth inning, Walczykowski roped a home run over the blue monster wall in left field to tie the game at 1-1.
 
In the bottom of the sixth inning, LMU scored three runs on three hits to take the lead back at 4-1. In the top of the seventh inning, Walczykowski led off with a single through the right side. Mehlhaff advanced Walczykowski to third on a double to left. Masino hit an RBI infield single to make it 4-2. Peck smacked an RBI single to left to get Pepperdine within one at 4-3.
 
In the top of the final inning, Peck drew a walk with one out. The Lions collected the final two outs on a hard-hit fly ball to left and a strikeout to take game one.
 
UP NEXT
 
The Waves and Lions will meet for game two of the West Coast Conference weekend series on Saturday, May 14 with first pitch set for 6 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the WCC Network.
