Jonathan Rahaeuser smashed the school record in the men's 3,000 meters to highlight the Pepperdine track teams' season-opening performance in a three-team meet with host Westmont and UC Santa Barbara.
Rahaeuser (Irvine, Calif./Calvary Chapel HS) won the race with a time of 8:33.37, about a half-second better than the second-place finisher from UCSB, and more than seven seconds better than the previous school record set by Conrad Wozniak (8:41.02) in 2009.
"Jonathan was the star of the team today," Pepperdine Coach Robert Radnoti said. "He ran like we planned it. He's been training super-hard for this. He ran like a machine against some really good competition. He got out early and was in third or fourth after the first mile but got faster and faster. He took the lead with two laps to go, and coming around the last turn he had the energy to push for a really great time. I'm really, really proud of him. His parents were there and everyone was cheering for him."
Rahaeuser also holds the school record in the 1,500 meters, which he set last year.
Radnoti was pleased with the first meet of the season.
"We had some good performances for the early season," he said. "There were a few PRs by folks that have been working hard. It was a great meet to get under our belts. These were the best conditions we've ever had at Westmont. It was rainy and cold the last couple of years, and today it was in the 80s."
The best finish on the women's team was freshman Syrii Daniel (Yucaipa, Calif./Yucaipa HS), who took third place in the 200.
A number of freshmen making their debuts put their names on the Pepperdine's list top-five times list: Daniel in the 100 meters, Rachel Rant (Boise, Idaho/Boise HS) in the 800, Katie Engel (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima HS) in the mile and Hannah Turpin (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon HS) in the 400 hurdles.
Pepperdine's other leaders on the women's side were seniors Kasey Ullery (Simi Valley, Calif./Simi Valley HS/Moorpark CC) in the 400 meters and Summer Enalen (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral HS) in the 100 hurdles.
Pepperdine next heads to Florida for both its week devoted to Project Serve and the North Florida Invitational on March 1-2.
