RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Freshmen Lindsay Sheaffer, Elle Lemco and Nick Blanchard all turned in second-place finishes to lead the Pepperdine track team in a four-team meet hosted by Riverside Community College on Saturday that also included Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton.
Sheaffer (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) finished just .01 of a second behind the winner in the women's 1,500 meters. She was second in a time of 4:51.04. Lemco (San Jose, Calif./Prospect HS) was second in the women's 3,000 meters with a time of 10:35.81, and Blanchard was runner-up in the men's 3,000 meters in 8:48.86.
"We didn't have any individual winners but we were very, very close," Pepperdine Coach Robert Radnoti said. "Lindsay ran a great race and had a big PR. She took the lead with 80 meters to go and it was neck and neck. She just got nipped at the tape, which was a heartbreaker, but it was a great race for her. Elle and Nick ran very, very hard, competitive races, exactly how we wanted them to run. Both had the lead and almost won those. It was a beautiful day. Our runners did a good job at meet. Our team is continuing to get stronger and stronger."
Two Waves put their names on the program's all-time top five list. Senior Channing Williamson (Kennesaw, Ga./North Cobb HS) ran the 400 meters in 1:00.86, good for third place, and freshman Izzy Connell (Campbell, Calif./The Harker School) had a time of 25.92 in the 200 meters, good for fourth. Connell was also the top Wave in the 100 meters.
Some of the Waves leading the team in other events were freshman Alex Campana (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge HS) in the women's 800 meters and freshman Aric Crowell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont HS) in the men's 1,500 meters.
Pepperdine's next meet is the Ben Brown Invitational in Fullerton next Saturday (March 15).
