Track Record Times Continue to Fall in Irvine
Izzy Connell and Treet Allison played big parts in today's new records.
IRVINE, California – Izzy Connell and Treet Allison set individual school records and were also part of Pepperdine relay teams that established new marks on Saturday as the men’s and women’s track teams competed at the UC Irvine Spring Break Classic.
The Waves had a total of five school record times at the event including sophomore Nick Heath (Scotts Valley, Calif./Scotts Valley HS) lowering his own best in the men’s 5,000 meters on Friday night.
“We surpassed our previous week and this was probably our best meet in the history of the program,” Pepperdine Coach Robert Radnoti said.
Connell (Campbell, Calif./The Harker School) took back the 400-meter record that she previously owned with a 56.35 that was good for fourth place. The senior entered the 2017 season holding the record, then lowered it to 57.06 in the first outdoor meet of the season, but freshman Talya Holenstein (Portland, Ore./La Salle Catholic College Prep) went 56.55 last week.
“Izzy lost the record and I think that fired her up to get it back,” Radnoti said. “She was outstanding.”
Allison (Canyon, Texas/Canyon HS) picked up his second school record in a week. The freshman claimed the 400-meter record last weekend and set the 1,500-meter mark today. He went 3:55.26, more than two seconds better than the previous record, and finished in eighth place.
“Treet crushed the record, and there are outstanding things on the horizon for him,” Radnoti said. “He’s just so competitive. As he gets more experience and strength, he’s going to start winning these races.”
The women’s 4x400 team of Connell, Holenstein, senior Gabrielle Ellis (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland HS) and sophomore Catie Barilla (Alta Loma, Calif./Los Osos HS) smashed the old record, going 3:51.82, which was more than four seconds better than a time established last year. The quartet finished in second place.
In the men’s 4x400, Allison was joined by senior Aric Crowell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont HS), senior Torin Wile (Beverly Hills, Mich./Brother Rice HS) and freshman Josh Ortega (Clairemont, Calif./High Tech HS) to go 3:31.39, breaking the record set in 2015.
The Waves had a number of other good finishes. Ellis took fourth place in the 100 meters and ninth place in the 200. Her time of 25.22 in the latter event moved her to #2 all-time at Pepperdine behind Connell. Senior Nick Blanchard (Portland, Conn./Portland HS) took fifth place in the men’s 3,000 meters in a time of 8:37.48, which exactly matches his personal best, which already ranks #3 all-time at Pepperdine.
Senior Kendall Dunn (Aurora, Colo./Cheney HS/Arapahoe HS) took sixth place in the women’s 800 meters, while Barilla was sixth in the 400 hurdles. Freshman Emma Engelland (Gig Harbor, Wash./Gig Harbor HS) had another PR in the 100 hurdles in 15.73. She ranks #3 all-time at Pepperdine in the event.
Pepperdine competes at the Cal Poly Invitational next Saturday (March 25).
