IRVINE, Calif. - Lisa Santroch won the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase on Friday night as a small group of Pepperdine runners got the UC Irvine Spring Break Invitational started.
The meet concludes on Saturday with the bulk of the Waves in competition.
Santroch (Shoreline, Wash./Shorewood HS), a junior who is a former Pepperdine soccer player, has transitioned over to cross country and track this year. She was running at just her second track meet and was competing in her first steeplechase. She finished first out of seven competitors with a time of 11:12.65, more than five seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Although there haven't been many steeplechasers in Pepperdine history, Santroch's time moves her into #2 on the Waves' all-time list in the event.
Freshman Elle Lemco (San Jose, Calif./Prospect HS) had a good showing in the women's 5,000 meters. Her time of 17:54.52 put her in eighth place out of 18 runners, and it moved her into #3 on the Waves' all-time list.
Three Pepperdine men ran in the 5,000 meters, and the Waves were led by freshman Gordie Thomas (Fallbrook, Calif./Great Oak HS).
