SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Syrii Daniel and Lindsay Sheaffer each led the Pepperdine women's track teams in two events at the Cal Poly Invitational on Saturday, while Tori Occhipinti ran a wind-aided time in the 100-meter hurdles that would otherwise have set a school record.
Daniel (Yucaipa, Calif./Yucaipa HS), a sophomore, was the Waves' top runner in the 200 and 400 meters, while Sheaffer (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS), a freshman, had the team's top time in the 800 and 1,500 meters. Her time of 4:47.08 in the 1,500 moved her into the #5 slot on the Waves' all-time list.
Occhipinti (Coto de Caza, Calif./Crean Lutheran HS), a freshman, ran 15.50 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, but the wind was measured at 2.5 miles per hour. That means that Summer Enalen's school record of 15.59 seconds still stands for now.
"Unfortunately the wind was a little too much," Pepperdine Coach Robert Radnoti said. "But Tori will get that school record by the end of the season."
Other women that led the squad in various races were freshman Gabrielle Ellis (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland HS) in the 100 meters, junior Lisa Santroch (Shoreline, Wash./Shorewood HS) in the 400-meter hurdles and sophomore Katie Engel (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima HS) in the 5,000 meters.
Radnoti praised Santroch's efforts on the day, saying: "Lisa ran very strongly in her three races, the 1,500, 400 hurdles and 800, all in a 70-minute span. It was a good training day to get her ready for the steeplechase next week."
Radnoti also singled out senior Chloe Levray (Burbank, Calif./Lycee International de Los Angeles) for her efforts in the 100, 200 and 400.
"Chloe is the team captain of our sprint group and an outstanding leader," he said. "I'm excited for the day she had."
For the men, the Waves' top runners were freshmen Aric Crowell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont HS) in the 800, Nick Blanchard (Portland, Conn./Portland HS) in the 1,500 and Gordie Thomas (Fallbrook, Calif./Great Oak HS) in the 5,000.
Pepperdine will send some of its runners to the Cal/Nevada Collegiate Championships in La Jolla, Calif., next Friday and Saturday (April 4-5).
