MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine's men's and women's track teams get the 2013 season started on Saturday when the Waves head up the coast to Westmont for a three-team meet with the host Warriors and UC Santa Barbara.

The running events start at noon at the Westmont Track.

"We had a great January and start of February," Pepperdine Coach Robert Radnoti said. "The training has been awesome. We're really excited for the first meet. We've got some athletes that are ready to race. It's going to be a good day for us."

With such stalwarts as Lauren Lodge and Aneasha Lawrence having graduating after last year, a new group of women will be chasing spots in the Pepperdine records book. Of the 26 on the roster, 14 are in their first year running track for the Waves.

A couple of record-holders return on the women's side. Senior Summer Enalen (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral HS) has the best 100-meter hurdles time in school history and ranks #2 in the 400-meter hurdles. Junior Natasha Hamlin (Arcadia, Calif./Mayfield Senior School) was part of the Waves' record 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams in 2011.

A few other returnees have also etched their names onto Pepperdine's top five-best times list: senior Kasey Ullery (Simi Valley, Calif./Simi Valley HS/Moorpark College) and sophomore Triston Brown (Colorado Springs, Colo./Briarcrest Christian HS) in the 400 meters and senior Juliet Casillas (Los Angeles, Calif./Folsom HS) in the 100-meter hurdles.

Not many schools can claim an Olympian on their active roster, but junior Sarah Attar (Escondido, Calif./Escondido HS) competed for Saudi Arabia at the 2012 London Games.

Just a few of the newcomers looking to impress include freshmen Syrii Daniel (Yucaipa, Calif./Yucaipa HS), Stasia Demick (Seattle, Wash./Holy Names Academy), Katie Engel (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima HS) and Rachel Rant (Boise, Idaho/Boise HS).

On the men's side, the Waves keep a limited roster of five runners. They're led by senior Jonathan Rahaeuser (Irvine, Calif./Calvary Chapel), the school's record-holder in the 1,500 meters, and junior Jesse Aston (Martinez, Calif./Alhambra HS).

Radnoti's staff includes a couple of veterans in 2000 Olympian Samantha Clayton and alum Dale Reicheneder, and some new coaches in Tim Cullen, Morgan Franz and Jen Triggs.

Pepperdine, which competes independently, has seven other meets on the upcoming schedule until mid-April and the end of the school year, including the North Florida Invitational (March 1-2), Ben Brown Invitational (March 9), Northridge Invitational (March 16), UC Irvine Invitational (March 22-23), San Francisco State Distance Carnival (March 29), Cal State L.A. Classic (April 5-6) and Pomona-Pitzer Invitational (April 13). Runners who can achieve NCAA qualifying times will continue to compete after that.
