BELMONT, Calif. - As has been the case for the majority of the season, seniors Kenny Smith and Lauren Lodge led the Pepperdine men's and women's cross country teams as they were the first members of their squads to cross the finish line at the West Coast Conference Championships on Saturday morning.

Lodge (Hopkinton, Mass/Hopkinton HS) finished in 19th place overall in the women's 6k at the Crystal Springs course with a time of 21:57. After missing the first two meets of the season due to an injury, she has been the Waves' top runner at the last three events. Unfortunately, her time on the sidelines set her back far enough that she wasn't able to recapture her form of 2010, when Lodge placed fifth at the league meet and earned All-WCC honors.

Smith (Willits, Calif./Willits HS) was the top men's finisher for the fifth time in six races as he took 31st place with a time of 25:56 in the 8k.

BYU, in its first season as a member of the WCC, ended Portland's run of 32 straight men's conference titles. San Francisco won its third straight women's crown. The Waves placed eighth on the women's side and ninth in the men's race.

"This was the 27th and final year for Crystal Springs," Pepperdine Coach Robert Radnoti said. "The course went out in record style. The WCC did the best job I've ever seen with the meet itself, the course, the organization and the pageantry. They really did a nice job. It was almost perfect running conditions. Since I've been here, I don't think we've seen the sun much for this race.

"Everyone that's in good shape ran as fast as they ever have. This was a good competition. Everyone's in good spirits. They recognized all of the seniors at the post-meet banquet, and we had the most seniors along with San Francisco. They were nicely honored, and that was neat."

Two women's runners made tremendous improvements over their times at the 2010 WCC Championships. Senior Aneasha Lawrence (Sun Valley, Calif./Village Christian HS) came in 35th place with a time of 22:41, which was more two minutes better than last year. Sophomore Adrianna Davies (Coronado, Calif./Coronado HS) took 41st with a time of 22:48, nearly a minute faster. The Waves' other scorers in the women's race were seniors Paige Mobley (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS) and Courtney Rolando (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek HS).

In the men's race, Pepperdine's #2-#5 runners were sophomore Jesse Aston (Martinez, Calif./Alhambra HS), junior Jonathan Rahaeuser (Irvine, Calif./Calvary Chapel HS), senior Jordan Wozniak (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) and freshman David Bermea (Rosamond, Calif./Rosamond HS). Aston and Rahaeuser posted better times than their 2010 race at Crystal Springs.

Pepperdine will close out cross country season at the NCAA West Regional, hosted by Stanford, on Saturday, Nov. 12.
