MALIBU, Calif. - After returning to campus last week for preseason training, the Pepperdine cross country team left almost immediately for several days of practice and team-building on Catalina Island.
Head coach Robert Radnoti, now in his seventh season in charge of the Waves, annually takes his team off-campus for a preseason retreat, and the squad greatly enjoyed their five-day, four-night stay.
The Waves have some rebuilding to do in 2012, but Radnoti feels good about the team he has assembled. A large senior class in 2011 has left the Waves with only two returners on the women's side -- Adrianna Davies and Olympian Sarah Attar, while the men have four runners back, including two that saw action last year, Jesse Aston and Jonathan Rahaeuser.
But with a number of women's track athletes doubling up with cross country and 15 newcomers to Pepperdine, the women's squad has ballooned to a roster of 26, giving Radnoti plenty of competition for the top spots on the team.
