Pepperdine Invitational Set for Saturday in Alumni Park
The Waves are looking to build off the good results of their first race.
Sept. 11, 2013
MALIBU, Calif. - Alumni Park will be the site of the Pepperdine Invitational on Saturday, as the Waves' cross country teams will host their first large-scale meet on campus since 2007.
Saturday's meet will serve as a preview of the West Coast Conference Championships, which Pepperdine will be hosting for the first time on November 2.
Among the schools expected to compete are Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount, Pacific, Saint Mary's, San Diego and Santa Clara.
Alumni Park is already one of the most picturesque places on campus as it overlooks the Pacific Ocean, but the venue's beauty will only be heightened on Saturday by the "Waves of Flags" display, where 3,000 flags have been installed to remember the victims of the 9/11 tragedy. The cross country course will take the runners right by the flags.
The women's 6k race will be at 9 a.m., followed by the men's 8k at 10 a.m. Admission for spectators at the main entrance of Alumni Park will be $5.
Pepperdine's women will look to continue their early-season success in their second meet of the season. The Waves placed second out of eight teams at the Mark Covert Classic back on August 31. They were led to the finish line by sophomore Katie Engel (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima HS) and junior Lisa Santroch (Shoreline, Wash./Shoreline HS), who were eighth and 10th, respectively.
