Pepperdine Men

Sept. 14, 2012

MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine cross country teams will head out for their second meet of the season when they take part in the UC Riverside Cross Country Invitational on Saturday.

UC RIVERSIDE - The meet will be held on UCR's campus on the Agricultural Operations Course. The day starts at 7:30 a.m. with the Women's 6K Invitational and will be followed by the Men's 8K Invitational (8:05 a.m.), Women's 5K Collegiate Open (8:45 a.m.) and Men's 8K Collegiate Open (9:15 a.m.). More than 15 schools are entered in each race.

RADNOTI SAYS - Pepperdine seventh-year head coach Robert Radnoti says: "This week's workouts have been really good. We had two good workouts on Monday and Wednesday. The kids are just crushing the workouts. We run on two-week cycles, we ran the same workouts that we did two weeks ago, and for example we ran 600 repeats in Alumni Park and everybody ran 5-10-15 seconds faster than they did a couple of weeks ago, so we're looking for some really good performances in UC Riverside."

LAST MEET - Jonathan Rahaeuser and Katie Engel led the men's and women's teams, respectively, as the Waves took part in the season-opening Mark Covert Classic hosted by Cal State Fullerton on Sept. 1. Engel, running her first collegiate race, finished in 14th place in the women's 5K with a time of 19:10.1 at the Carbon Canyon Park course. Rahaeuser, a three-year veteran, was 30th in the men's 8K with a time of 26:38.1. Overall, the women finished in ninth place and the men took 17th.

EXPERIENCE - The Waves are breaking in a very large group of new runners in 2012. On the women's side, only two of the 26 on the roster saw action last season. Fourteen of them are freshmen. For the men, two of the seven on the roster competed last season, while four have been part of the program previously and three are true freshmen. The women's team has three seniors and the men have two.

ACADEMICS - Pepperdine's cross country program is certainly one of the school's most accomplished in the classroom. In the 2011-12 school year, 15 student-athletes (those with grade-point averages above a 3.0) out of a possible 18 were named to the WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll, and 12 of them collected WCC All-Academic awards.

ABOUT PEPPERDINE - Pepperdine boasts a one-of-a-kind athletic department with unprecedented success for a school of its size. The Waves have won NCAA Division I championships in five different men's sports -- one of just 16 schools to have accomplished this feat -- and nine overall. Of this elite group, Pepperdine has the smallest enrollment and is the only school not in a BCS-affiliated conference. Located in scenic Malibu, Calif., the university overlooks the Pacific Ocean and its campus and athletic facilities are regularly voted among the nation's most beautiful. Pepperdine, which is affiliated with the Church of Christ, ranks #54 overall on U.S. News and World Report's list of America's best colleges.
