Cross Country Teams at Northridge Invitational on Saturday
Oct. 11, 2012
MALIBU, Calif. - With the West Coast Conference Championships coming up at the end of the month, the Pepperdine men's and women's cross country teams have one of their final tune-ups this weekend at the Northridge College Invitational.
NORTHRIDGE - The meet will be held on the campus of Cal State Northridge. The women's 5K is at 8 a.m. and the men's 8K is at 8:30 a.m.
RADNOTI SAYS - Pepperdine seventh-year head coach Robert Radnoti says: "This season we've been real fortunate in that our competitions have been in two-week cycles. We've been able to set up some really nice two-week cycles of training. So we've been consistent in running the same kinds of workouts. Everyone can see their improvements and we're trying to build their confidence because we've got a very young group of men and women."
LEADERS - In each of the first three meets of the season, the Waves were led to the finish line by senior Jonathan Rahaeuser (Irvine, Calif./Calvary Chapel HS) on the men's side and freshman Katie Engel (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima HS) of the women's squad. Freshman Jordan Scandlyn (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo-Atherton HS) has the been the men's #2 runner at all three races, while freshman Rachel Rant (Boise, Idaho/Boise HS) has been the #2 women's runner at two of the three meets.
EXPERIENCE - The Waves are breaking in a very large group of new runners in 2012. On the women's side, only two of the 27 on the roster saw action last season. Fourteen of them are freshmen. For the men, two of the seven on the roster competed last season, while four have been part of the program previously and three are true freshmen. The women's team has four seniors and the men have two.
ACADEMICS - Pepperdine's cross country program is certainly one of the school's most accomplished in the classroom. In the 2011-12 school year, 15 student-athletes (those with grade-point averages above a 3.0) out of a possible 18 were named to the WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll, and 12 of them collected WCC All-Academic awards.
ABOUT PEPPERDINE - Pepperdine boasts a one-of-a-kind athletic department with unprecedented success for a school of its size. The Waves have won NCAA Division I championships in five different men's sports -- one of just 16 schools to have accomplished this feat -- and nine overall. Of this elite group, Pepperdine has the smallest enrollment and is the only school not in a BCS-affiliated conference. Located in scenic Malibu, Calif., the university overlooks the Pacific Ocean and its campus and athletic facilities are regularly voted among the nation's most beautiful. Pepperdine, which is affiliated with the Church of Christ, ranks #54 overall on U.S. News and World Report's list of America's best colleges.
