Feb. 24, 2012
MALIBU, Calif. - Aided by a few costly defensive lapses by Fresno State and a gutty pitching performance from starter Jon Moscot, the Pepperdine baseball team took game one of a three-game set with Fresno State 3-2 on Friday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
The Waves (5-1) plated two unearned runs in the first and scored the eventual game-winning run in the eighth by virtue of a wild pitch by the visiting Bulldogs (3-3). On the mound junior righty Moscot (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Cuesta College) earned his first win of the year, throwing eight complete innings, collecting nine strikeouts and allowing two runs on nine hits. Freshman Aaron Brown(Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) earned his second save of the year as he got a pair of flyouts and closed things down with a strikeout.
Despite being outhit nine to five, the runs the Waves earned were timely. In the bottom of the first, shortstop Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) reached on an error by the Bulldog shortstop. Centerfielder Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) pulled a ball into the 3-4 hole, forcing the second baseman into making an errant throw that allowed him to advance to second and push Vincej to third. Joe Sever(San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine Prep) would follow and reach first on the shortstop's second error of the inning to score Vincej. With two on and one out, Brown would ground out to the second baseman, pushing across Gelalich for the second run of the inning.
The Waves would hold their 2-0 lead until the top of the fourth, when the Bulldogs would put together three-straight hits to score a run. They would follow again in the top of the fifth with a sacrifice fly that would knot the game at two, but Moscot battled out of trouble and kept the game tied.
Things would stay quiet until the bottom of the eighth, when Miles Silverstein (Bell Canyon, Calif./Calabasas HS) would start things off with a single up the middle off the Bulldogs' starter Tyler Linehan. Vincej would sacrifice bunt Silverstein over to second. After Linehan struck Gelalich out, the Bulldogs would bring in closer,Taylor Garrison to face the middle of the Waves' order. With two outs, Sever would send a shot down the left field line for a single that would advance Silverstein to put runners at the corners. With designated hitter Matt Forgatch(San Marino, Calif../Denison University) up and the count 2-1, Garrison threw a wild pitch that would go to the backstop and allow Silverstein to score the go-ahead run from third.
In the top of the ninth, Brown would come in from right field to pitch. After surrendering a leadoff walk, Brown would settle in and use his defense, inducing a pair of flyouts and slamming the door with a strikeout to notch his second save of the year.
The Waves and Bulldogs will be back out on the diamond at Eddy D. Field Stadium for game two of the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. PT.
