Nate Johnson Records a Double; Corey Miller Strikes Out Four
Feb. 23, 2013
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Pepperdine could not replicate its comeback magic against Texas A&M and dropped a 3-1 decision Saturday night at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park. The Waves (5-2) tied the game in the fifth, but the Aggies (5-2) rallied for two in the bottom of the frame to even the series.
It was another tough night for hitters as the pitching shined under the lights in front of 5,539 fans. Making his second start against the Aggies, Corey Miller (Laguna Nigel, Calif./Serra HS) tossed an effective 6.0 innings, allowing three runs off eight hits and struck out four with just one walk. Texas A&M’s Daniel Mengden (2-0) was better, allowing one run off five hits in 7.0 innings and struck out eight without issuing a free pass.
Hutton Moyer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) continued to enjoy a solid series and drove in the lone Pepperdine run. Trailing 1-0, David Oppenheim (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island HS) hit a one-out single. After a sacrifice by Ranny Lowe (Granada Hills, Calif./Notre Dame HS), Moyer singled to center.
The Aggies responded in the bottom of the inning, tacking on a pair of runs on a two-run triple by Mengden, who also went 2-for-4 at the plate. After allowing the tying run in the fifth, the righthander retired the Waves in order in the sixth and seventh.
Pepperdine’s bullpen continued to do stellar work. Mat Snider (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos HS) tossed two hitless innings in relief of Miller (1-1) and struck out a pair of Aggies.
Nate Johnson (Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo HS) recorded his fourth double of the season with two outs in the fourth. No Wave recorded more than one hit.
Pepperdine takes on Texas A&M in the rubber match of the three game series Sunday. First pitch against the Aggies is set for 11:00 a.m. at Blue Bell Park.
