HONOLULU, Hawaii – Hawaii scored in the sixth and eighth innings to take a 2-0 victory in the opening game of a four-game series against the Pepperdine baseball team Wednesday night.
The Rainbow Warriors’ Matt Cooper tossed a complete-game three-hitter, out-dueling two Wave pitchers in the low-scoring affair. Cooper struck out 10 batters to grab the win.
Matt Maurer (Medford, Ore./North Medford HS) picked up the loss despite giving up just one earned run in 6.2 innings pitched. Maurer gave up six hits, struck out three and walked three to fall to 0-1 on the year. Evan Dunn (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman HS) tossed the final 1.1 innings, giving up one hit and one run.
The Wave offense never got anything going against the UH right-hander, picking up singles in the third, fifth and seventh innings. Pepperdine got just one runner past second base when Brad Anderson (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) singled and then advanced to third on a wild pitch and groundout in the fifth inning. Anderson was stranded after a groundout to second.
UH scored on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning and then an RBI double in the eighth. The Warriors tallied seven hits on the day.
Cooper did not allow a single walk in the game, moving to 2-0 on the year. Pepperdine pitching allowed a total of four walks.
The loss ends a six-game winning streak for the Waves since dropping their season opener. Pepperdine falls to 6-2 on the year, while UH moves to 5-4. The two teams have three more games scheduled to close out this week. Thursday and Friday’s games will be at 8:35 p.m. (PST) and Saturday’s finale will be at 8:05 p.m. (PST).
The Waves’ four games in Hawaii are the team’s first road games of the year.
