MALIBU, Calif.- The Pepperdine baseball team once again broke through in the middle innings to take control of a game, this time courtesy of a grand slam from junior second baseman Joe Sever, and cruised to a 7-2 victory over visiting USC Tuesday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) crushed a 2-2 offering from Trojan starter Brandon Garcia over the fence in left to spot the Waves (7-2) a four-run lead they would not relinquish. The home run was Sever's first of the season, and he finished the day 3-4 with two runs scored and the four RBI. The loss knocks the Trojans (7-1) from the ranks of the unbeaten.
Waves starter Matt Maurer(Medford, Ore./North Medford HS) picked up his second win of the season, quieting a strong Trojan lineup that was averaging more than eight runs a game and came into today's contest hitting .332 as a team. Maurer went 5.1, surrendering two runs on seven hits while striking out three and not giving up a walk.
He ran into some trouble in the sixth, as he loaded the bases with one out and was relieved by freshman Andrew Alvarez (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King HS), who kept the damage minimal, giving up only a single run on a walk and striking out a pair of Trojan hitters to get out of the jam. Alvarez worked scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth before giving way to Michael Swanner(Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) who closed it out with a scoreless ninth.
The Waves bats continued to build on the lead as well, putting up single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, the loudest being a huge Sam Meyer(Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) home run to dead center in the sixth. Meyer finished the day with a pair of hits in four trips to the plate.
Tony Cooper (San Carlos, Calif./Canada College), who had three hits on the day, plated the run in the fifth with a sac fly, and Austin Davidson(Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the seventh to give the Waves the final run of their 7-2 win.
Pepperdine now hits the road for the first time this season, heading to northern Kentucky for a weekend three-game set against the 14th ranked Louisville Cardinals. First pitch Friday is set for noon PT, and Saturday and Sunday start at 10 a.m. PT.
