MALIBU, Calif. –Playing its first home game since Feb. 19, Pepperdine dropped a 6-2 decision to Seton Hall in the opening game of a non-conference weekend series Friday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The Waves (7-6) struggled to find the big hit and the Pirates (1-9) had no such trouble in the first meeting between the two teams.
Seton Hall broke the contest open in the third inning, plating three runs and added three more in the sixth in collecting their inaugural victory of the season. The Pirates started the third with a walk and added three singles and a sacrifice fly to take a 3-0 lead off righthander Scott Frazier (Upland, Calif./Upland HS).
In the sixth, the Waves bullpen struggled as the Pirates collected three walks to load the bases. Seton Hall took a 4-0 lead on a bases loaded walk, followed by an RBI single from Zack Granite. The Pirates tacked on another run on a wild pitch for a 6-0 lead.
Pepperdine struck for a pair in the seventh as Nate Johnson (Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo HS) singled down the rightfield line and advanced all the way to third on a bunt single by Chris Amezquita (La Mirada, Calif./UCLA). With runners at second and third, Bryan Langlois (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) drove in the first run on a groundout and David Oppenheim (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island HS) brought in Langlois on a sacrifice fly.
The Waves could not do any more damage against a strong, complete game effort by Jon Prosinski (1-2). The righthander struck out four and did not walk a batter and scattered six hits.
Frazier (1-2) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on four hits and struck out seven, but walked four in 5.2 innings. Making his collegiate debut, Ivan Dilda (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid Pacific Institute) allowed just one hit in 2.1 scoreless innings. Alex Najera (Anaheim Hills, Calif./Canyon HS) struck out a pair in the scoreless ninth.
No Wave collected more than one hit off Prosinski and Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) had the game’s only extra base hit with a one-out double in the third.
Pepperdine looks to even the series against Seton Hall Saturday, March 9 in game two. First pitch against the Pirates is set for 1:00 p.m. at Eddy D. Field Stadium in a game featuring live video via WaveCasts.
