MALIBU, Calif. - Behind starter Jon Moscot'scomplete game, nine-strikeout performance, the Pepperdine baseball team defeated the visiting Rhode Island Rams, 2-1 on Friday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
The complete game was the first of the year for Moscot (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Cuesta College) and the second of his career. He allowed the Rams (4-6) only one unearned run on five hits and one walk, while tallying nine strikeouts. With the win, Moscot improves to 3-1 on the season.
The Waves (9-4) plated runs in the second and the sixth to get the 2-1 lead. First baseman Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) had an RBI single in the bottom of the second, and right fielder Aaron Brown(Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) added an RBI groundout in the sixth to drive in the go-ahead run that would be the eventual game winner.
In the bottom of the second, the team got things started, as left fielder Bryan Langlois(Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) was hit by a pitch. Langlois advanced to scoring position off a Brown groundout and Meyer singled to right field to drive in the run, his third RBI of the season.
The Rams would tie things up in the top of third, as leadoff hitter Jeff Roy would lay a bunt single down the third base line, forcing Moscot into a tough play that he would throw wide of first, enabling Roy to get all the way to third. A groundout by designated hitter Jeff Cammans would drive him home at tie the game, 1-1.
The score would stay deadlocked until the bottom of the sixth, when centerfielder Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) would get a leadoff single past the diving second baseman. Second baseman Joe Sever(San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) followed with a walk, and both runners advanced on a groundout by Langlois. Brown would follow with a groundout of his own to score Gelalich from third. The Waves would threaten with runners on the corners and two outs, but Rams' reliever Mike Bradstreet came in from the bullpen to escape the jam. Rams' starter Chris Pickering was charged with the loss and is now 1-3 on the season.
The Waves and Rams will be back out at Eddy D. Field Stadium for a 1 p.m. PT start on Saturday, as the Waves look to take the series.
