MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine struck for three runs in the third, but were stymied from there as Seton Hall took a 9-3 victory in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The Waves (7-8) suffer their first series sweep of the season at the hands of the suddenly resurgent Pirates (3-9).
David Oppenheim (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island HS) went 2-for-3 with a run scored and was the lone Pepperdine player to record multiple hits in the contest. James Grandpre (Lancaster, Calif./Desert Christian HS) added a double for the only extra-base hit.
Trailing 3-0 after a rough first inning, Pepperdine scored three runs in the second. Bryan Langlois (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) drew a walk and Oppenheim singled. After a sacrifice by Chris Amezquita (La Mirada, Calif./UCLA) Grandpre doubled to right center, scoring Langlois. Chris Fornaci (Walnut Creek, Calif./De La Salle HS) collected his first base hit and drove in a pair on a single to tie the score at 3-3.
Seton Hall tacked on a unearned run in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead and never looked back, adding two runs in the sixth, one in the seventh and two more in the ninth.
Sam Burum (1-0) collected the win for the Pirates in relief, allowing two hits in 2.0 scoreless innings. Aaron Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) suffered the loss for Pepperdine, allowing four runs (three earned) off seven hits and walked a pair in 3.2 innings.
Seton Hall outhit the Waves 13-6 and capitalized on four free passes and three costly errors. Mike Genovese and Giuseppe Papacio recorded three hits apiece to fuel the Pirates offensively.
Pepperdine returns to action when it takes on local rival USC Tuesday, March 12 at Dedeaux Field. First pitch against the Trojans is set for 6:00 p.m. in a game featuring a live audio broadcast via WaveCasts.
