MALIBU, Calif. – No. 20 Louisville scored all its runs between the fifth and sixth innings en route to a 4-2 victory over Pepperdine Friday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium. Redshirt junior shortstop Miles Silverstein (Bell Canyon, Calif./Calabasas HS) homered for the Waves, who lost for the first time all year at home in dropping to 6-7 on the season.

The Cardinals improved to 9-3.

After Silverstein’s first round-tripper of the year sailed over the left-field fence in the third, Louisville came back with three in the fifth and one in the sixth off Pepperdine starter Aaron Gates (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS).

The Cardinals had two aboard with one out in the fifth when first baseman Ryan Seiz brought home the go-ahead run with a double to right center, and then two batters later catcher J.J. Ethel made it a 3-1 game on his two-bagger to the gap in left.

Pepperdine cut its deficit to 3-2 after a wild pitch by Louisville starter Matt Koch allowed sophomore Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) to score, but the Cardinals pushed their lead right back to two on a two-out RBI single by Ryan Wright.

Koch went 8.0 innings with seven strikeouts in lifting his season record to 2-1. Tony Zych followed with a scoreless ninth, getting Sever to ground out with the tying runs on base to earn his fifth save of the year.

Gates fell to 0-3 on the year and was continually pitching out of jams in the early innings. The junior left-hander had runners at first and second and no outs in the first before coming back with two punch outs and a ground ball to second, and later in the fourth he saved a run with an underhanded flip that resulted in tag out of Cade Stallings at home plate.

Gates, who finished the game with seven strikeouts, also left runners stranded at first and second in the third inning. He tossed 102 pitches before being lifted one batter into the sixth by freshman Michael Swanner (Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS).

Swanner allowed the inherited runner to score but finished the inning with a strikeout of Stewart Ijames.

Sophomore Brian McIlhenny (Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy College Preparatory) came on to start the eighth and pitched two scoreless frames with one strikeout.

Pepperdine and Louisville resume their three-game series Saturday at 1 p.m.
