March 11, 2012
MALIBU, Calif. - On the heels of a pair of complete games Friday and Saturday, Waves' starter Corey Miller gave the team a strong eight innings, and Zach Vincej paced the offense, driving in a pair of runs with a leadoff home run and a double, as the Waves nailed down their first weekend series sweep of the season with a 8-2 win over visiting Rhode Island on Sunday at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
After a rocky first few innings in which Miller (Laguna Niguel, Calif./JSerra HS) pitched out of jams to minimize the damage, he settled in to nail down the win for the Waves (11-4), shutting the Rams (4-8) out after the third inning. On the day, Miller surrendered two runs, both earned, on seven hits and one walk while striking out eight.
Junior shortstop Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) go the Waves on the board early, drilling a 1-1 fastball over the fence in left in the bottom of the first for his first home run of the season. He added an RBI double in the third to tie the score at two. Vincej finished the day 2-4 with the two RBI and two runs scored.
The Waves would manufacture a run in the fourth to take the lead, benefitting from a leadoff walk to first baseman Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS). Aaron Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) followed with a bunt single to put runners at first and second. After a Miles Silverstein (Calabasas, Calif./Calabasas HS) sac bunt, Austin Davidson(Oxnard Calif./Oxnard HS) drove Meyer in with a sac fly to center, making the score 3-2 Waves.
Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) drew a one-out walk in the fifth and came around to score on a passed ball. Junior second baseman Joe Sever(San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) chased Rams starter Nick Narodowy with a single in the fifth and scored on an RBI single from Meyer to put the score at 5-2.
The Waves put the game out of reach with three more runs in the decisive sixth inning in which all nine hitters came to bat. Silverstein and Davidson led off the inning with back-to-back singles, and the top of the order received four consecutive free passes--three of which came with the bases loaded.
Sophomore righty Eric Karch(Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) picked up where Miller left off, tossing a scoreless ninth and striking out a pair of Rams to close out the game.
Next up for the Waves is the Dodgertown Classic, a 2 p.m. Tuesday date against UC Irvine at Dodger Stadium.
