Sophomore Catcher Homers Twice as Waves Roll Past Trojans
March 12, 2013
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Kolten Yamaguchi picked a great night for his first hits of the season and lifted Pepperdine to a 9-4 non-conference victory over USC on a chilly Tuesday night at Dedeaux Field. The Waves (8-8) broke open a 3-3 tie with a five-run sixth to take the first of two 2013 meetings against the Trojans (7-9).
Yamaguchi (Kona, Hawaii/Konawaena HS) entered the night hitless, but made the night memorable with his first base knock of the season and first collegiate home run with a two-run blast to right field to start the Waves big sixth inning. The catcher provided an additional exclamation point in his next at-bat with a solo shot to right center field.
After struggling last weekend at home against Seton Hall, Pepperdine's offense surged on the road at USC. Bryan Langlois (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) turned in a big night at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, including a bases-clearing hit to right center in the sixth inning, and a career-high four RBI. Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) also had a multi-hit day, going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and two walks.
Mat Snider (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos HS) collected the win for Pepperdine, allowing one run off four hits in 3.0 innings and struck out three. Eric Karch (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) also enjoyed a strong night out of the bullpen, tossing two shutout innings, allowing just a pair of hits with a strikeout. Michael Swanner (Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) closed the contest with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief and struck out three of the five batters he faced.
The Waves rapped 10 hits against six Trojan hurlers. Kyle Davis (1-2) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on four hits in 0.2 innings.
Pepperdine scored first in the second. The Waves loaded the bases and took the early lead on a double play groundout. USC promptly answered with a pair in the second and increased their lead to 3-1 with a run in the fourth.
The Waves tied the contest in the fifth. Ranny Lowe (Granada Hills, Calif./Notre Dame HS) singled to lead off and Davidson walked. After a wild pitch, Pepperdine had runners on second and third base. After Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Claif./St. Francis HS) drove in Lowe on a groundout, Langlois hit his first of two doubles to deadlock the game.
Pepperdine broke through in the fifth. Cody Nulph (Orange, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) led off with a single and scored on Yamaguchi's first homer on a 3-1 pitch. The Waves were not done. With two outs Davidson singled. A hit batsmen and a walk to Meyer loaded the bases for more Langlois heroics. The outfielder powered a ball to right field, clearing the bases and giving the Waves an 8-3 lead.
It was more fireworks for Yamaguchi in the seventh as he squared a 2-1 pitch and sent it out to right center field for the first multi-home game by a Wave this season and just the second player in the West Coast Conference to do so in 2013.
Pepperdine opens defense of its WCC title when it welcomes longtime rival Loyola Marymount to Malibu for the opening series of the 2013 league season in three Wells Fargo PCH Cup battles beginning Friday, March 15. First pitch of game one against the Lions is set for 3:00 p.m. at Edd D. Field Stadium in a game featuring live video via WavesCasts.
