March 18, 2012
MALIBU, Calif.- The bats came alive for the Pepperdine baseball team on Sunday afternoon, coming through with 10 runs on a season-high 17 hits to defeat Kent State 10-4 and even the three-game series at 1-1.
Redshirt senior designated hitter, Floyd Given (Rohnert Park, Calif./Sacramento City College), in just his second start of the season went 3-for-4, with one RBI. Freshman catcher Kolten Yamaguchi (Kona, Hawai'i/Konawaena HS) also had three hits, going 3-for-5 with one RBI in his third career start. Right fielder Aaron Brown(Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) broke out with a 2-for-5 day, including a bases-clearing RBI triple in the bottom of the fourth. He led the team with four RBI on the day. In total, all nine of the Waves' batters had at least one hit, with six having a multi-hit day.
On the mound righty starter Scott Frazier(Upland, Calif./Upland HS) was solid, going 6.0 innings, allowing only four hits with two strikeouts en route to his third win of the season.
The Waves (15-4) got on the board first in the bottom of the second and never looked back. The run would come as Given would score from third on a Yamaguchi single to left field, for his first RBI of the season.
In the third the Waves would add two more as second baseman Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine Prep HS) started off the inning with a walk. In a well-executed hit and run, Sever went first to third on a single by left fielder Tony Cooper(San Carlos, Calif./Canada College). Brown would drive in Sever as he drilled a ball of Golden Flashes') starter Ryan Bores' ankle. Bores would stay in the game and minimize the damage as only one more run would cross for the Waves on an RBI groundout from Given.
The Waves would take their 3-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth, where they would double their lead with three more runs. Yamaguchi would start the inning with a leadoff single and shortstop Zach Vincej(Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) would get on by virtue of being hit by a pitch. With one out, the Golden Flashes intentionally walked Sever to load the bases. With two outs, Brown made Kent State pay as he rifled a triple to left center, clearing the bases and putting the Waves up 6-0.
After the Golden Flashes got on the board in the top of the fifth, the Waves would see two more runs cross in the bottom half of the inning, by virtue of an RBI single from third baseman Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) and a RBI double from center fielder Matt Gelalich(La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS).
After a quiet sixth, the Waves would take a 8-1 lead into the top of the seventh. The Golden Flashes would get on the board once again as they plated three runs to put the score at 8-4.
In the bottom of the seventh the Waves would strike for the final time, as Cooper collected two RBI on a single to the right side, scoring Gelalich and Sever to take a 10-4 lead into the top of the eighth.
In was a team effort out of the pen in the final two innings, as righty Michael Swanner (Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) took the mound in the eighth to relieve Andrew Alvarez (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King HS), who threw the seventh. Swanner had one strikeout and put up a zero in the eighth. Lefty Brian McIlhenny (Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy College Prep) entered in the top of the ninth to get two outs before Eric Karch(Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) came on with two on and two out to record the final out.
The Waves and the Golden Flashes will play their rained out Saturday game at 3 p.m. PT on Monday, March 19 at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
