MALIBU, Calif.- The Pepperdine baseball team got on the board early and was able to hold on to defeat Kent State 6-4 to take the series victory on Monday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
The Waves' (15-5) starter, right handed pitcher Corey Miller(Laguna Niguel, Calif./JSerra HS) threw 6.2 innings, tallying four strikeouts en route to his fourth win of the season.
Offensively, the Waves collected 13 hits and were led by third baseman Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) and designated hitter Floyd Given (Rohnert Park, Calif./Sacramento City College), who each went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Right fielder Aaron Brown(Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) has also found his stroke, as he went 4-for-5 from the plate with one run scored today.
After a quiet first inning for both the Waves and the Golden Flashes (8-8), the Waves were able to get on the board in the bottom of the second. First baseman Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) started things off with a one-out double to right center and Given followed with a single to put Meyer 90 feet away. Davidson would be hit by a pitch to load the bases and catcher Kolten Yamaguchi(Kona, Hawai'i/Konawaena HS) would come through with his second RBI of the season on a single up the middle. The Golden Flashes would walk in a second run in the inning to give the Waves the 2-0 lead heading into the third.
The Waves would extend their lead in the fifth, as a bases-loaded double from Given would score two runs. The Golden Flashes would head to their pen and the Waves would manage one more in the inning, as Davidson would single off reliever Eric Dorsch to score Meyer from third. The Waves would threaten with bases loaded and no outs, but Dorsch was able to get a pop up, a strikeout and a ground ball to end the inning, but not before the Waves extended their lead 5-0.
In the sixth inning the Golden Flashes would get on their board as George Roberts hit a two-run home run to put the score at 5-2. The Waves would manage one more run in the bottom half of the inning off Davidson's second RBI single of the day to push the score to 6-2.
The Golden Flashes would touch up the Waves' bullpen for two more runs, one in the seventh and one in the eighth. Righty Michael Swanner(Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) would take the hill in the top of the ninth for his third save of the season.
The Waves will return to Eddy D. Field Stadium tomorrow for a midweek tilt with Long Beach State, set for 3 p.m. PT.
