SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Corey Miller tossed eight scoreless innings and Eric Karch retired the side in order in the ninth as the Pepperdine baseball team got a 1-0 road win over Santa Clara in a little more than two hours on Friday night.

Miller (Laguna Niguel, Calif./JSerra Catholic HS) gave up just four hits and no walks in his eight innings of work to move to 4-1 on the year and power the Waves to a conference victory. Karch (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) notched his sixth save of the season, getting three straight pop-outs in the ninth.

Hutton Moyer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) doubled to left field with two outs in the top of the third and then Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) drove in his eighth run of the season, bringing Moyer home with a single into right field. It turned out to be all the offense Pepperdine needed on the day.

The third was the only inning that the Waves put up multiple hits early in the game, getting singles in the first second and fourth as well. Davidson and Bryan Langlois (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS)strung together singles in the eighth inning and then advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. The Broncos got out of the inning, however, throwing out Langlois at second and then nabbing Davidson as he tried to score.

Santa Clara got a pair of hits in the fourth, pushing a runner to third base with two outs. Miller was able to work his way out of the jam, though, striking out the final batter of the inning. Another inning-ending strikeout in the eighth stranded a Bronco runner on second base, to keep Santa Clara scoreless. Miller finished the game with seven strikeouts, facing just three batters over the minimum in his eight innings of work.

Karch came in and didn't allow a runner to reach base, mowing through the top of the Bronco order in quick fashion.

D.J. Zapata went the distance for SCU in the loss, giving up seven hits and one run in nine innings of work to help keep his team within striking distance all the way to the end.

Davidson and Brad Anderson (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) both finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate, with Davidson recording the only RBI of the night. Langlois went 2-for-4 on the day, recording a pair of singles.

Jose Vizcaino Jr. recorded half of the Broncos' hits, going 2-for-4 at the plate.

The win moves Pepperdine to 15-6 overall on the season and 2-2 in WCC play. SCU falls to 9-12, 0-1 WCC. The two teams have a pair of games left this weekend to finish off their three-game series.
