SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team got a game-winning two-run home run from Kolten Yamaguchi in the seventh inning, coming away with a 4-2 road win over Santa Clara on Saturday afternoon.
The Waves' offense took seven innings to finally wake up, but put up four runs in the frame to come from behind and get the team's second win over the Broncos.
SCU jumped on top early, scoring on an RBI single in the bottom of the first. A solo-shot two innings later put the home team up 2-0.
The Waves offense stayed dormant until the seventh inning when Bryan Langlois (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) led off with a double and then Aaron Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) drove him in with a triple. The inning was far from over as Brown came home on a sacrifice fly from Brad Anderson (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) and then Yamaguchi (Kona, Hawai'i/Konawaena HS) stepped up and hit his first homer of the year. Following an Aaron Barnett (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS) single, Yamaguchi drove a ball over the right-field fence to put the Waves ahead 4-2.
Despite giving up the two early runs, Jackson McClelland (Beaumont, Calif./Redlands East Valley HS) settled in to keep his team in the game until the seventh-inning comeback. McClelland threw 7.0 innings, scattering six hits and striking out six batters. The sophomore righty didn't give up a walk in the game, moving to 3-1 on the year with the win.
Chandler Blanchard (Henderson, Nev./Coronado HS) came in and tossed a perfect eighth inning and then Eric Karch (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) picked up his seventh save of the season, and second in as many days, retiring the side in the ninth. Yamaguchi assisted in the ninth, throwing out a runner at second on a steal attempt for the second out.
The Waves had recorded just two hits off of Bronco starter Peter Hendron prior to the seventh inning. Hendron falls to 2-2 with the loss.
Barnett was the only Wave with multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-4 at the plate and scoring a run. Yamaguchi's two RBI were a team high. The visitors scored their four runs on six hits.
The win moves Pepperdine to 16-6 overall on the year and 3-2 in WCC play. SCU falls to 9-13, 0-2 WCC. The teams wrap up their series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
