SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Aaron Brown did it all Sunday afternoon, leading a late offensive explosion and tossing eight scoreless innings in a 10-0 win over Santa Clara to give the Pepperdine baseball team a series sweep.
Brown hit a pair of homers, driving in four runs to dominate the game both at the plate and on the mound. The Waves scored all 10 runs in the final four innings to bust open what looked to be a pitcher's duel early.
Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) came to the plate with a runner on and two outs in the top of the sixth inning, breaking a scoreless tie with a shot to right-center to put the Waves on top 2-0. Brad Anderson (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) followed with a double that would chase SCU starter Steven Wilson from the game, and then Aaron Barnett (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS) greeted reliever Jason Seever with an RBI single.
After getting one hit through the first five innings of play, Pepperdine scored three runs on three hits in the top of the sixth.
Brown continued to put on a show, striking out a batter to end the seventh inning and keep the Broncos off the board, and then came up to bat in the eighth and added some insurance runs. Brown homered to left field, bringing home Bryan Langlois (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS), who had reached on an error, to make it a 5-0 Wave lead.
Brown went 2-for-5 on the day, driving in a team-high four runs. On the mound, Brown threw 8.0 innings, giving up just three hits and no runs, while striking out seven batters. He did issue three walks and hit two batters, but worked his way out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth caused by three of the free bases. Brown got a popup to end the frame and end the only real threat the Broncos mustered all game.
The win moved the junior lefty to 4-1 on the year and dropped his ERA to 3.19. It was the second time this season he had hit a home run and recorded a win on the mound. Brown leads the Waves with four home runs and 22 RBI.
The Waves continued to pour on the offense late, scoring five more runs in the ninth inning. Devin Carter (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley HS) hit a solo shot as one of four Wave pinch-hitters to record RBI in the frame. Pepperdine batted around in the top of the ninth to double its scoring total and put the game well out of reach.
Six different players drove in runs for the Waves as the visitors scored 10 runs on 12 hits overall. Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) and Barnett each went 2-for-4 at the plate. Davidson drove in a run and scored two.
The win moves the Waves to 17-6, 4-2 WCC and SCU falls to 9-14, 0-3 WCC. Pepperdine heads back home this week for a non-conference matchup with Cal State Northridge on Tuesday and then a weekend series against Portland.
