Waves Complete WCC Series Sweep with 19-4 Victory against Santa Clara

MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine unloaded offensively and beat Santa Clara 19-4 to complete a West Coast Conference series sweep on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The Waves (13-9, 5-1 WCC) win their fifth consecutive league game and keep the Broncos (8-15, 0-3 WCC) winless in conference play.

Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) completed a remarkable series with another big day, going 3-for-5 with a double, home run (to dead center field) to go along with a career-high five runs scored. Davidson hit .714 (10-14) with five doubles, a home run, three RBI and seven runs scored. The Pepperdine third baseman slugged 1.286, had an on-base percentage of .733 and recorded six hits in consecutive at-bats at one point.

Chris Amezquita (La Mirada, Calif./UCLA) went 3-for-5 with two doubles, a home run and four RBI. It was the third homer of the season for the Pepperdine outfielder. Kolten Yamaguchi (Kona, Hawaii/Konawaena HS) enjoyed another strong day at the plate with a career-high four hits in four trips to the plate with a pair of RBI.

Bryan Langlois (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) went 3-for-5 with his 11th double, good for a share of the team lead with Davidson, and drove in a pair. Ranny Lowe (Granada Hills, Calif./Notre Dame HS) added a 3-for-6 day with a double and three RBI, while Cody Nulph (Orange, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) chipped in a 2-for-3 day with a double and two RBI.

Pepperdine scored twice in the first inning, but Santa Clara responded with three runs in the second for a 3-2 advantage. It would not last long as the Waves exploded for 17 unanswered runs. Pepperdine plated eight runs in the second, eight more in the third and then tacked on a single run in the eighth to cap the scoring.

Pepperdine set season single-game highs in runs (19), hits (21) and extra base hits (10). The Waves matched their single-game high for home runs (2).

Aaron Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) collected his first win of the year, allowing three runs on seven hits and struck out a career-high seven in 5.0 innings. Pepperdine’s bullpen took it from there allowing just four hits in the final four scoreless innings and struck out four Broncos.

Jackson McClelland (Beaumont, Calif./Redlands East Valley HS) tossed the sixth with a strikeout, followed by Ivan Dilda (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid Pacific Institute) in the seventh. Evan Dunn (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman HS) came on in the eighth and struck out a pair. Mat Snider (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos HS) closed it out with a strikeout in the ninth.

For the series, Pepperdine hit .369 as a team with 18 doubles, three home runs and the Waves outhit the Broncos 41-26. Pepperdine pitching limited Santa Clara to just four extra-base hits in the series – all of them doubles.

Pepperdine returns to action when it travels north to take on No. 20 Cal Poly Tuesday, March 26. First pitch against the Mustangs is set for 6:00 p.m. at Baggett Stadium.

NOTES: The 19 runs were the most recorded by the Waves since a 19-3 triumph against Brown in the 2010 LSU Tournament … The 19 runs were the most tallied against Santa Clara in the all-time series, dating to 1960 … The last time the Waves reached double-digit runs against Santa Clara was a 12-5 victory in 2009.
