MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team got another stellar pitching performance Sunday afternoon to complete a three-game sweep against conference foe Portland. Aaron Brown tossed 8.1 innings to lead the Waves to a 6-1 win over the pilots.
Offensively Pepperdine pushed across a pair of runs in the second and then one more in the third before breaking the game open with three insurance runs in the eighth. Portland would load the bases and score one run in the ninth, but that was it for the visitors.
Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) struck out eight batters and walked just one, giving up one earned run and only three hits on the day to move to 5-1 on the season. He also recorded a single and a run scored in the game.
Manny Jefferson (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS) got the scoring started for the Waves, hitting an RBI single off the wall with the bases loaded in the second. Hutton Moyer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) then hit a sacrifice fly in the following at-bat to put Pepperdine up 2-0 early. Devin Carter (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley HS) came through with an RBI single in the following frame, giving the Waves a 3-0 lead they would take into the eighth.
“Getting the early lead helps a lot,” said Brown. “It frees you up a little to just go out and throw your best stuff and see if they can hit it.”
As a team the Waves gave up just one run all weekend to sweep the Pilots, outscoring Portland 13-1.
“Corey (Miller) set the tone for us on Friday and then Jackson (McClelland) gave us another great outing yesterday,” said Brown. “My job on Sunday is to try to keep that same pace, try to work quickly and be efficient, so we can score runs and keep that momentum going.”
Brown was able to mow through the Portland lineup with relative ease for most of the day, facing one batter over the minimum through eight innings of work. The only trouble came in the ninth inning when the Pilots loaded the bases with one out against the Waves’ lefty. Kevin Farley drove in Portland’s only run of the game with a single after Brown exited the contest, with the runner still being charged to Brown’s record. Jayson Balades (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) got the final out of the game on a groundout to second.
Prior to the trouble in the ninth, Pepperdine plated three runs in the eighth, getting an RBI double from Jefferson to again start the scoring. Moyer followed with an RBI single and Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) made it 6-0 with a sacrifice fly.
Moyer finished the day 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, and Jefferson went 2-for-4, also driving in two runs and scoring one. Aaron Barnett (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS) was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a walk.
Farley recorded two of the Pilots’ four hits, going 2-for-4 with the team’s only RBI. Colin Feldtmam took the loss, falling to 1-4 on the year. Pepperdine recorded 14 hits against two Portland pitchers.
The win moves the Waves to 20-7 overall, 7-2 WCC and drops Portland to 5-22, 0-9 WCC. Pepperdine will be back in action on Tuesday when it hosts UC Irvine for a non-conference matchup before traveling to Saint Mary’s for another WCC series next weekend.
