SPOKANE, Wash.- The Pepperdine baseball team dropped the rubber match of the series on Sunday afternoon 14-3 to Gonzaga at the Patterson Complex.

Despite taking an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Bulldogs (18-7, 2-1 WCC) came back strong, scoring three in the bottom of the second and two in the bottom of the fourth, one in the bottom of the seventh and eight in the eighth to take a 14-3 lead. The Waves (17-11, 1-2 WCC) touched up the Bulldogs' starter Billy Moon for 11 hits in 8.1 innings, but left six men on base and were unable to string together timely hits.

The Waves got on the board in the top of the first inning after a leadoff single from Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) and a RBI single from first baseman Sam Meyer(Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) to take a 1-0 lead.

Waves' starter Corey Miller(Laguna Niguel, Calif./JSerra HS) went 6.2 innings, allowing six runs on nine hits. He tallied four strikeouts in his third loss of the season.

The Zags touched Miller up for three runs in the bottom of the second and would never relinquish their lead, adding two more in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-1 lead.

The Waves added a run in the bottom of the sixth as Vincej had a leadoff single to center field and catcher Miles Silverstein (Bell Canyon, Calif./Calabasas HS) followed with his first hit of the game. After a fly ball by second baseman Joe Sever(San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) moved the runners over, Meyer delivered his second RBI single of the day to score Vincej and cut the deficit to three, 5-2.

The Bulldogs answered with a run of their own in the seventh to push their lead to 6-2.

In the bottom of the eighth the Bulldogs touched up reliever Andrew Alvarez (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King HS), who entered in the bottom of the seventh to get the Waves out of a two-out runner on third situation. The Zags scored eight runs in the eighth, including a two-run home run from outfielder Royce Bollinger, his second home run of thegame.

The Waves chased the Bulldogs' starter in the top of the ninth after pinch hitter Drew Hacker (Moorpark, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) started off the inning with a single. Floyd Given (Rohnert Park, Calif./Sacramento City College) came in to pinch hit and doubled to score Hacker for the Waves final run of the game.

The team will return to Southern California, but will stay on the road as they travel to USC on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. PT midweek tilt.
