MORAGA, Calif. – The No. 29-ranked Pepperdine baseball team broke open a tie ballgame with five runs in the last three innings to score a 6-2 victory over Saint Mary’s on Friday afternoon. The win moves the Waves past the Gaels for the top spot in the conference standings.

Hutton Moyer and Austin Davidson each posted two-RBI days for the Waves and four Wave pitchers combined to hold the Gaels to two runs.

Moyer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) doubled home his first run of the game early, getting the Waves on the board in the third inning by slapping a ball down the left-field line to bring home Brandon Caruso (Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS). Moyer struck again as part of a two-run seventh when he and Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) hit back-to-back RBI doubles to put Pepperdine up 3-1.

After scoring their first run in the bottom the fourth inning, Saint Mary’s tried to answer the Waves’ two-run seventh, scoring one run of their own in the bottom half of the inning, but couldn’t come any closer than 3-2.

Pepperdine poured in two more runs in the eighth, getting RBI’s from Caruso and Aaron Barnett (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS). Davidson capped the day with a solo homer to right field in the ninth inning, giving the Waves a comfortable 6-2 advantage for Eric Karch (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) to close out.

Corey Miller (Laguna Niguel, Calif./JSerra Catholic HS) picked up the win, giving up one earned run on seven hits in 6.1 innings pitched to move to 6-1. Ivan Dilda (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid Pacific Institute) replaced Miller in the seventh, getting the final two outs of the inning. Chandler Blanchard (Henderson, Nev./Coronado HS) and Karch tossed scoreless eighth and ninth innings respectively to close the game out.

Moyer was 3-for-5 on the day, smacking a career-high three doubles. Davidson was 2-for-5, hitting his second home run of the year.

Collin Ferguson recorded the only RBI of the day for Saint Mary’s and Connor Hornsby led the Gaels by going 3-for-4 at the plate. Ryan Brockett took the loss to move to 4-3.

The win pushes Pepperdine to 22-7 overall, 8-2 WCC and drops Saint Mary’s to 13-15, 5-2 WCC. The two teams have a pair of games left in the series, playing at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
