April 5, 2014
MORAGA, Calif. – The No. 29-ranked Pepperdine baseball team once again got big contributions out of its top two hitters in the order as Austin Davidson and Hutton Moyer led the way in a 10-4 win over Saint Mary’s on Saturday afternoon.
Moyer went 3-for-3 at the plate, driving in one run and scoring three more, and Davidson hit his second home run in as many games, this time with the bases loaded in the second inning. The Waves scored 10 runs on 12 hits in the game to stay atop the WCC standings.
After each team scored in the first, Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) busted the game open for the Waves with a grand slam in the top of the second. Kolten Yamaguchi (Kona, Hawai'i/Konawaena HS) got things started in the second, hitting an RBI single with a pair of runners on. Moyer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) was hit by a pitch to load the bases and then Davidson launched a homer that stayed just fair inside the right foul pole to clear the bases.
Collin Ferguson answered with a homer of his own, hitting a two-run shot in the bottom of the third for the Gaels to make it a 6-3 ballgame.
The Waves manufactured a pair of runs in the sixth, getting a sacrifice fly from Manny Jefferson (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS) and an RBI single from Moyer to keep a comfortable 8-3 advantage.
After scoring a run in the sixth, Saint Mary’s loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. Matt Maurer (Medford, Ore./North Medford HS), who replaced starter Jackson McClelland (Beaumont, Calif./Redlands East Valley HS) to start the sixth, got a fly out, strikeout and a popout in foul territory to battle his way out of the jam and hold on to the four-run lead.
Pepperdine added two more runs in the eighth thanks to a Gael miscue to grab the 10-4 lead.
Yamaguchi went 2-for-3 at the plate driving in a run and scoring one more. Brandon Caruso (Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS) was also 2-for-3 on the day, scoring three runs and drawing a walk, and Aaron Barnett (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Moyer got on base five times in the game, drawing two hit-by-pitches to go along with his three hits. He now has six hits in two games against Saint Mary’s and has been on base in eight of his 10 at-bats.
McClelland picked up the win to move to 5-1 on the year. The Waves’ starter threw 5.0 innings, giving up four hits and three runs. Maurer gave up one run in his 2.0 innings pitched and A.J. Puckett (Danville, Calif./De La Salle HS) and Evan Dunn (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman HS) tossed the final two innings of the game.
The Gaels posted eight hits on the day, led by Anthony Gonsolin and Darian Ramage’s two hits apiece. Ferguson had three RBI. Cameron Neff took the loss, falling to 5-3.
The Waves move to 23-7 overall, 9-2 WCC with the win and Saint Mary’s falls to 13-16, 5-3 WCC. The two teams will wrap their series up tomorrow at 1 p.m.
