April 14, 2012
MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team swept a doubleheader on Saturday at Eddy D. Field Stadium, taking game one 3-2 in 10 innings and game two 4-3. Freshman Drew Hacker came up with a clutch bases loaded single in the bottom of the tenth inning of game one to leave the Pilots on the field and notch the 3-2 win. The Waves completed the sweep by pushing two across in the bottom of the seventh in game two and holding on for the 4-3 victory.
Coming off his best start of the season, game one starter Jon Moscot (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Cuesta College) again pitched deep into a game, giving up only two runs on 10 hits over 6.2 while striking out six but did not factor into the decision. Sophomore Eric Karch (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) picked up the win, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings, giving up only one hit and striking out three.
The Waves got on the board first, pushing a run across in the fourth, as Miles Silverstein (Calabasas, Calif./Calabasas HS) hit an RBI single to score Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS), giving the Waves a 1-0 lead.
The Pilots answered with a pair of runs in the seventh to take a 2-1 lead that would hold into the ninth, but the Waves were able to manufacture a run to take the game to extras. Floyd Given (Rohnert Park, Calif./Sacramento City College) led off the ninth by beating out an infield single. Hacker (Moorpark, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) came in to pinch hit for Matt Forgatch (San Marino, Calif/Denison University) and moved Given over with a sac bunt before Silverstein drilled a 1-0 fastball down the left field line for an RBI double to tie the game at two.
Junior second baseman Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) led off the 10th with a single up the middle and moved up to second on a single by Meyer. Given followed with a walk to load the bases with one out and bring up Hacker, who hit the first pitch into right center to score Sever and notch the 3-2 win. Game two was another pitcher's duel, as Scott Frazier (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) pitched into the eighth inning, surrendering three runs on eight hits to pick up the win. Michael Swanner (Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) went the remaining 1.1, allowing no runs on one hit and tallying one strikeout to pick up his fourth save of the season.
The Waves were on the board first again in game two as Meyer led off the second with a double and came around to score on an RBI single from freshman third baseman Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS).
The 1-0 lead held until the top of the fifth, when the Pilots scored a pair with a couple of singles and a one-out triple. Frazier settled down, though, getting a couple ground ball outs to minimize the damage and keep the game at 2-1 Pilots.
The Waves answered in the sixth, as Forgatch drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on a game-tying RBI double from senior right fielder Ryan Van Amburg (Campbell, Calif./St. Francis HS).
Shortstop Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif. Saugus HS) got the Waves going in the seventh, leading off the inning with a double--his third hit of the game. Silverstein followed with a sac bunt, and Sever worked a 9-pitch walk to put runners at the corners with one out. Sever then stole second, which proved to be a key play, as Meyer hit a 2-2 pitch up the middle to score a pair and put the Waves up 4-2.
Frazier gave up a leadoff double and a walk to start the eighth but made a huge 0-1 pitch to get a 6-4-3 double play. He exited the game with two outs and the runner on third. Another double off lefty reliever Matt Maurer (Medford, Ore./Medford North HS) cut into the Waves' lead, making the game 4-3, but that would be as close as the Pilots got. Swanner came in to record the four-out save and preserve the win.
The Waves will look to finish the series sweep on Sunday, April 15 at 1 p.m. PT at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
