MALIBU, Calif.- The Pepperdine baseball team battled back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game in the eighth and force extra frames, but the Waves surrendered the eventual game-winning run in the top half of the tenth and were unable to capitalize on a threat in the bottom half of the inning, falling by a score of 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.

Missed opportunities were the story of the day for the Waves, as they left eight runners on base and twice hit into inning-ending double plays with runners in scoring position.

Starter Corey Miller (Laguna Niguel, Calif./JSerra HS) battled through 6.0 innings, giving up three runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out three but did not factor into the decision. Freshman righty Mat Snider(Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos HS) picked up for Miller in the seventh and threw three hitless innings of relief, racking up four strikeouts against one walk.

Down 3-0 in the fifth, the Waves cut into the deficit, as Miles Silverstein (Calabasas, Calif./Calabasas HS) got them going with a one-out single, and a Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) walk and a Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) single loaded the bases. After a flyout, Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) drove in Silverstein and Gelalich with a clutch two-out double to put the score at 3-2, Pilots.

The Waves tied the game in the eighth, when Sever led off with a single and was bunted over to second from Tony Cooper (San Carlos, Calif./Canada College)--one of two sacrifices he had on the day. Sever then stole third and scored to tie the game at three when the throw went wide into left field. Sever finished the day four-of-four with the two-RBI double, three singles and a walk. Cooper finished two-of-two with a pair of singles, two sac bunts and a walk.

After a scoreless ninth, sophomore righty Eric Karch (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) came into the game in the tenth and was touched up for a leadoff double. He recorded the first out of the inning on a sac bunt and walked Pilots cleanup hitter intentionally to put runners at the corners with one out. Karch then made a great play off the mound on a squeeze attempt to cut down the runner at the plate for the second out of the inning. However, the next hitter singled up the middle, and Turner Gill scored just ahead of Gelalich's throw on a close play at the plate to put the Pilots up 4-3.

The Waves threatened in their own half of the tenth with back-to-back one-out singles from Sever and Cooper, but Pilots closer Owen Jones was able to get a 4-6-3 double play ball to end the game and strand Sever at third.

The Waves return to action Tuesday at No. 14 Cal State Fullerton. Game starts at 6 p.m. PT.
