Waves Hold Off Santa Clara Rally, Complete Sweep
Pepperdine moves to 9-6 in WCC play and evens season record at 17-17
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- It got a bit too close for comfort, but the Pepperdine baseball team withstood a Santa Clara rally to hold on for a 9-8 victory Sunday to complete a three-game sweep of the Broncos at Schott Stadium.
The Waves (17-17, 9-6) led 9-3 after five innings before Santa Clara (15-18, 4-11) scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it 9-8. But Pepperdine's Michael Mahony entered in relief and went the final 2.1 innings and gave up just one hit and no runs while striking out four to secure the sweep.
- Junior Jordan Qsar (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla HS) went 3-for-4 with two RBI.
- Senior shortstop Chase Lambert (Malibu, Calif./Malibu HS) hit a home run, drove in two and scored three runs.
- Junior right fielder Matthew Kanfer (Playa Del Rey, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) drove in a pair of runs.
- Sophomore left fielder Duncan McKinnon (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Redondo Union HS) went 2-for-5 with a double.
- Sophomore right-hander Michael Mahony (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison HS) tossed a scoreless final 2.1 innings and had four strikeouts in picking up the save.
The Waves got going right away as a Chase Lambert walk, Brandt Belk single to right, a Matthew Kanfer RBI single to center and a Jordan Qsar sacrifice fly made it 2-0 Pepperdine after just four batters.
Santa Clara tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second, but the Waves answered in the next half inning as Lambert led off with his fourth homer of the season (and second of the series) to make it 3-2 Pepperdine. The Waves eventually loaded the bases with one out before Quincy McAfee hit a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 4-2.
The Broncos scored one in the bottom of the third before the Waves again answered in the next half inning -- this time on a Kanfer sacrifice fly and back-to-back RBI singles from Qsar and Cory Wills to increase the advantage to 7-3.
Pepperdine added two more in the fifth inning as back-to-back singles by Duncan McKinnon and Dempsey Grover eventually led to Grover scoring on a wild pitch and Lambert hitting a sacrifice fly to make it 9-3.
The score remained that way until the seventh inning when the Broncos loaded the bases and got a bases-clearing double from Jake Brodt and that was followed by a pinch-hit, two-run homer by Cory Moore to quickly cut the Wave lead to 9-8.
Mahony entered in the bottom of the seventh and the sophomore closed the door on Santa Clara over the final 2.1 innings to pick up the save. Benjamin Slattery, who pitched three innings of relief and gave up one run on one hit, picked up his first win of the season.
The Waves host Cal Poly 3 p.m. Tuesday at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
