Waves Blanked by Gonzaga 2-0 Saturday in WCC Play
Pepperdine Limited to Four Hits
April 20, 2013
MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine was on the wrong side of another strong pitching performance and suffered a 2-0 shutout loss to Gonzaga Saturday in West Coast Conference play at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The Waves (20-17, 8-6 WCC) drop their third straight series to the surging Bulldogs (26-10, 13-4 WCC) who have rattled off 11 consecutive victories.
One day after All-American Marco Gonzalez limited Pepperdine to two runs off eight hits in seven innings, teammate Tyler Olson was even better, tossing a complete game shutout. The lefthander took a one-hitter and a 2-0 lead into the eighth inning before the Waves mounted a serious rally.
Pepperdine loaded the bases in the home half of the eighth. Chris Amezquita (La Mirada, Calif./UCLA) walked to leadoff. After a pair of fly outs, Drew Hacker (Moorpark, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) and Hutton Moyer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) hit back-to-back singles to fill the bases with Waves. Olson (7-2) got a fly out to end the threat and worked around a two-out single by pinch-hitter Brad Anderson (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) in the ninth to turn in his fourth complete game of the year.
Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) saved a run in the third. The Bulldogs got a two-out triple from Mitchell Gunsolus, but the Waves third baseman made a run-saving defensive gem to get the final out in the frame.
Gonzaga scored a run in the fourth off a wild pitch. The Bulldogs tacked on another in the fifth on a RBI single from Cory Lebrun to make it 2-0. Gonzaga threatened in the seventh and eighth inning, but the Waves got inning-ending double plays to end the threat. Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) snared a line drive off the bat of Lebrun and fired to third for a force out to end the seventh.
Righthander Corey Miller (Laguna Nigel, Calif./Serra HS) turned in a quality start for the Waves, allowing two runs off eight hits in 6.1 innings with a pair of strikeouts and three walks. Olson allowed four hits and struck out six with three walks. Pepperdine managed seven base runners and only one reached third.
Eric Karch (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) worked 2.2 scoreless innings in relief and allowed just one hit.
Ranny Lowe (Granada Hills, Calif./Notre Dame HS) collected a hit on a 1-for-2 day with a walk. Gunsolus went 2-for-3 with a triple, while Lebrun also had a pair of hits for the Bulldogs on a 2-for-3 day.
Pepperdine looks to bounce back in the series finale Sunday. First pitch against the Bulldogs is set for 1:00 p.m. at Eddy D. Field Stadium in a game featuring live video via WaveCasts.
