MALIBU, Calif. – Joe Sever’s three-run home run in the eighth put the finishing touches on a 7-2 victory over Loyola Marymount Saturday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium. Starter Scott Frazier and reliever Jon Moscot also pitched well as the Waves captured their fifth straight series win over the Lions and put them back in the thick of the West Coast Conference standings.

“We had a nice bounce-back win yesterday to help boost our confidence, and I think a lot of that carried over into today,” said Sever. “Everything came together for us these last two games with everyone contributing and we’ll be alright if we don’t beat ourselves.”

The victory lifted Pepperdine’s season record to 18-20 (4-5 WCC), while LMU dropped to 21-17 (5-4 WCC). However, the Waves still remain 3.0 games behind new conference leader San Francisco, which authored a three-game sweep of Santa Clara.

As for Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount today, there’s no telling what direction this game could have taken if Jonathan Johnson’s first-inning solo home run had counted. Johnson drilled the right-field scoreboard but missed the first-base bag as he circled the bases; the Waves and crew chief Rich Padilla noticed the misstep and Johnson was rung up on the 1-3 appeal play.

LMU head coach Jason Gill obviously was not happy with the decision, but became even more incensed in the bottom half of the inning when a Brian Humphries’ (El Cajon, Calif./Granite Hills HS) RBI double down the first-base line was ruled fair by home plate umpire Todd Ellis, leading to the first of four Pepperdine runs.

Gill argued the call for several minutes before getting the heave-ho. Then, one out and a walk later the Waves produced three-consecutive run scoring singles. All the runs were unearned to starter Aaron Griffin since Harrison Kain (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) led off the inning by reaching on shortstop Shon Roe’s fielding error.

Griffin, however, recovered quickly and shut the Waves down over the next 3.0 innings.

Frazier (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) put runners on base in each of his 6.0 innings and was fortunate to have escaped with one run scored against him, which was unearned in the fourth. With runners at first and second and one out, Alex Guthrie lined out to third baseman Miles Silverstein (Bell Canyon, Calif./Calabasas HS), who then made a wild throw to first in attempt to double off Joe Vierra.

The error allowed Roe to score and Vierra to advance to third, but Frazier left him stranded after getting Zac Fujimoto to fly out to center.

LMU came close to scoring again in the fifth on Matt Koch’s single to right, but Kain gunned down Bret Dahlson at home plate for his team-leading seventh outfield assist of the year.

Moscot (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Palisades Charter HS) followed Frazier to the mound and earned his first save at Pepperdine with 3.0 effective innings, in which he gave up one run on a hit, walk, and RBI ground ball in the seventh.

Sever’s second home run of the season provided the Waves with some extra insurance and only came as the result of back-to-back walks drawn by David DiPaola (San Carlos, Calif./Junipero Serra HS) and Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) against the Lions’ bullpen.

LMU reliever Martin Viramontes started Sever with a slider away, and then came back with a belt-high inside fastball that the sophomore second baseman clubbed over the right-field wall.

“I was sitting fastball the entire time and knew after he fell behind in the count that was the pitch I was going to see,” Sever said. “I put a good swing on it and the wind did the rest.”

Sever finished the game 2-for-3 and settled for a double in fourth after his shot to the left-center gap just missed clearing the padded fence post.

DiPaola scored two runs as part of a 1-for-3 day at the plate.

Pepperdine is off all next week as the players take their final exams. They’ll return to action Tuesday, May 3rd for a 3 p.m. home game vs. UCLA.
