MALIBU, Calif.- The bats came alive for the Pepperdine baseball team as they collected eight runs on 12 hits with two home runs to defeat San Francisco in game two of the West Coast Conference series on Saturday afternoon.
Eight of the Waves' (25-18, 8-6 WCC) nine hitters had at least one hit on the day, with three batters having multi-hit efforts, whereas the Dons (23-27, 9-8 WCC), were held to just five hits total.
Third baseman Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) was 3-for-4 on the day, including a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to open up a 7-3 lead. First baseman Sam Meyer(Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) added his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to left field in the top of the seventh to give the Waves their eighth run of the day.
Waves' starter Scott Frazier(Upland, Calif./Upland HS) earned his third consecutive victory with a strong outing, going 8.0 innings, allowing only three runs (two earned) on five hits. He also collected eight strikeouts and walked only two.
The Dons, in similar fashion to Friday's game, got on the board early, plating a run in the top of the first.
The Waves, down 1-0 took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of an error by the Dons' shortstop to plate the first run and a RBI single from Joe Sever(San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) to take the lead.
In the fourth the Waves manufactured a run to extend their lead. Designated hitter Floyd Given (Rohnert Park, Calif./Sacramento City College) earned a leadoff walk and right fielder Bryan Langlois (Oak Park, Oak Park HS) singled to put two on for the Waves. Center fielder Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) put down the sacrifice bunt to advance the runners and catcher James Grandpre(Lancaster, Calif./Desert Christian HS) delivered a fly ball to left field to score Given from third.
With a 3-1 lead, the Waves plated one more run in the fifth as they mounted a two-out rally. Left fielder Tony Cooper(San Carlos, Calif./Canada College) doubled to right center field and Meyer singled to score the speedy Cooper from second.
In the top of the sixth the Dons got on the board again, scoring two runs to draw within one, 4-3.
The Waves answered in the bottom of the sixth, as they got to Dons' reliever Haden Hinkle with two outs. With one on, short stop Zach Vincej(Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) singled through the left side to bring up Davidson. With two on and two out, Davidson took a 1-0 pitch for a ride, smashing his third home run of the season off the scoreboard in right field to break open what was a close game, putting the Waves ahead, 7-3.
Meyer added to the Waves' run total as he led off the bottom of the seventh and unleashed a first-pitch home run over the left field fence for his fourth home run of the year.
Reliever Eric Karch(Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) preserved the 8-3 lead as he retired the Dons in order in the ninth to solidify the victory.
The Dons and Waves will be back out at Eddy D. Field Stadium for the rubber match on Sunday at 1 p.m. PT.
