MALIBU, Calif. - The Waves made the most of their eight hits, manufacturing six runs and riding a strong performance from starter Corey Millerto a 6-1 win over San Francisco Sunday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
The Waves (26-18, 9-6 WCC) got on the board early, benefitting from a Dons' (23-28, 9-9 WCC) fielding error in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. The team added to the lead in the second, capitalizing on a leadoff double from Miles Silverstein (Calabasas, Calif./Calabasas HS). After a sac bunt from James Grandpre (Lancaster, Calif./Desert Christian HS) moved Silverstein to third, Zach Vincej(Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) scored him with a sac fly to put the Waves up 2-0.
Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine Prep HS) led off the third with a booming double to the left center gap and came around to score on an RBI single by Tony Cooper(San Carlos, Calif./Canada College). Silverstein drove in another run with a sac fly to push the Waves' lead to 4-0.
That would be more than enough for Miller (Laguna Niguel, Cali./JSerra HS), who went 7.0 to pick up the win. The sophomore righty scattered four hits and worked around five walks, surrendering only one run and tallying three strikeouts. Eric Karch(Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) closed out the game with a pair of scoreless innings, racking up three strikeouts.
The Dons were able to string three of their hits together in the seventh to put their run on the board, but Miller minimized the damage and kept the score at 4-1.
The Waves answered immediately in the bottom half of the frame, though, as Vincej led off the inning with a double, moved to third on a sac bunt from Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) and came around to score as Sam Meyer(Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) drove a pitch to the track in right field for a sac fly to put the score at 5-1.
Bryan Langlois(Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) led off the eighth with a single and capped the scoring at 6-1 when he came around to score on an RBI single from Grandpre.
The Waves return to action Tuesday, when they host UCLA at 3 p.m. at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
