MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine was limited to three runs in the fourth inning and dropped a 5-3 non-conference decision to Long Beach State Tuesday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The Waves (23-21) managed just three hits after the fourth inning against a stout effort by the Dirtbags’ (22-24) pitching staff in the first of two meetings between the two clubs in eight days.

Hutton Moyer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) led the charge offensively for the Waves going 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Ranny Lowe (Granada Hills, Calif./Notre Dame HS) also went 2-for-4 with a double. Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) turned in a 2-for-5 day with his 14th double of the year.

Trailing 2-0 after Long Beach State scored single runs in the second and third, Pepperdine took its first lead in a game since beating No. 24 Cal Poly last Wednesday, putting up three runs in the home half of the fourth.

Kolten Yamaguchi (Kona, Hawaii/Konawaena HS) singled to lead off and Drew Hacker (Moorpark, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) walked. Both advanced on a wild pitch and the Waves loaded the bases when Cody Nulph (Orange, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) was hit by a pitch. Moyer’s two-run single drove in a pair and Davidson’s single made it 3-2 Waves after four complete.

Pepperdine’s lead would not last long as the Dirtbags took the lead for good with a two-run fifth and added a run in the sixth for a 5-3 advantage.

Matt Maurer (Medford, Ore./South Medford HS) took the loss in relief, allowing four runs off four hits and struck out four in 4.0 innings. Michael Swanner (Cardiff, Calif./Brea HS) pitched a scoreless, hitless ninth with two strikeouts and lowered his ERA to 0.95 on the season.

Ty Provencher collected the win for LBSU in relief, going 2.1 innings allowing no runs off two hits with a strikeout. Jon Maciel shut the door on the Waves tossing 3.0 innings, allowing just one hit with three strikeouts and no walks. Jeff McNeil recorded a game-high three hits.

Pepperdine returns to action when it welcomes Saint Mary’s in a crucial West Coast Conference series beginning Friday, May 10 at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The Waves and Gaels enter the weekend tied for fifth place in the league standings and the top four teams advance to the 2013 WCC Championships in Stockton, Calif. May 23-25. First pitch of game one is set for 3:00 p.m. at Eddy D. Field Stadium in a contest featuring live video coverage via WaveCasts.
