MALIBU, Calif.- Despite taking an early 2-1 lead in the fourth inning, the Pepperdine baseball team fell 6-2 to No. 11 UCLA at Eddy D. Field Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

The Bruins (32-13) took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning, but the Waves (26-19) answered in the bottom half of the inning off an RBI double from first baseman Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) and an RBI single from right fielder Bryan Langlois(Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) to take a 2-1 lead.

The Waves' lead held through the top of the seventh when the Bruins took advantage of some fielding and throwing errors by the Waves to string together three run and take a 4-2 lead. They tacked on runs in the eighth and ninth by virtue of a manufactured run in the top of the eighth and a solo home run by designated hitter Jeff Gelalich in the top of the ninth to extend their lead to 6-2.

Needing some runs in their last ups in the bottom of the ninth, the Waves started off a one-out rally as James Grandpre (Lancaster, Calif./Desert Christian HS) and pinch hitter Drew Hacker (Moorpark, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) drew back-to-back walks. With two out, Grandpre and Hacker each advanced 90 feet off a wild pitch from Bruin reliever Scott Griggs. With the count 3-2 to third baseman Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS), Griggs hit Davidson with the pitch to load the bases. Second baseman Joe Sever(San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) hit a hard ball to the left side, but the Bruins were able to get Hacker at third for the final out of the inning.

Starter Matt Maurer (Medford, Ore./North Medford, Ore.) went 6.1 innings, allowed only two runs (one earned) on six hits in the no-decision. He also added three strikeouts and walked only two. Freshman Mat Snider(Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos HS) took his first loss of the season.

Offensively the Waves were led by Sever who was 3-for-5 and Meyer who went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one double.

The Waves will be back in action on Thursday as they host BYU for a three-game West Coast Conference set. Game one is set for 3 p.m. PT.
