MALIBU, Calif.- The Pepperdine baseball team fought back from a 5-0 deficit to defeat BYU 9-5 in game two of the West Coast Conference series on Friday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
The Waves (28-19, 11-6 WCC) collected 16 hits on the day and were led by right fielder Tony Cooper (San Carlos, Calif./Canada College) who had a 4-for-5 day with four RBIs and second baseman Joe Sever(San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) who was 3-for-5 with three RBIs, including plating the two runs that put the Waves up for good, 7-5 in the bottom of the eighth.
After the Cougars (19-23, 7-10 WCC) scored four runs in the third and one run in the fourth off Waves' starter Scott Frazier (Upland, Calif./Upland HS), the team got to work on playing catch up in the bottom of the fourth. Back-to-back singles were delivered from Sever and Cooper and Sever advanced to third on an error from the Cougars' right fielder. First baseman Sam Meyer(Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos HS) delivered the sacrifice fly to score Sever and put the score at 5-1.
In the bottom of the fifth the Waves cut into the deficit further, as the team manufactured two runs off an RBI single from Sever and an RBI double from Cooper and headed into the top of the sixth only down 5-3.
After giving up the early runs, Frazier settled in, looking stronger as the innings went by and shutout the Cougars in his final three frames of work. He went 7.0 innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
In the bottom of the seventh the Waves tacked on another run on a two-out single by Cooper that scored shortstop Zach Vincej(Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) and put the Waves down only one, 5-4.
Lefty Aaron Brown(Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) entered for the Waves in the eighth, starting things out with a strikeout. Despite walking the Cougars' Jaycob Brugman, he came back to induce a pop fly out and was able to orchestrate a 1-3-6 caught stealing of Brugman to end the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth left fielder Floyd Given (Rohnert Park, Calif./Sacramento City College) started things off with a single to right field off BYU reliever James Lengal. Given advanced to second on a wild pitch and with one out in the next at bat stole third to put the game-tying run 90 feet away. With two outs, center fielder Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) hit a ground ball that the first baseman was unable to field and reached safely, scoring Given from third. With the game tied 5-5, Gelalich stole second and advanced to third on an infield single by Vincej. Vincej stole second, but third baseman Austin Davidson(Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) walked to load the bases with two out. The next batter was Sever, who took the first pitch he saw into right field, scoring two and giving the Waves their first lead of the day, 7-5. The Cougars brought in reliever Matt Milke, but Cooper was able to take an 0-2 pitch up the middle to add two insurance runs for the Waves and give them the 9-5 lead.
Eric Karch(Fresno, Calif./Clovis HS) took the mound for the top of the ninth for the Waves and got three quick pop ups from the Cougars' eight, nine and one hitters to solidify the 9-5 victory.
The Waves will look for the sweep as they meet the Cougars for the final game of the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. PT.
