Qsar Homers Twice in Game Three Loss to Saint Mary's
The Waves hold a two-game lead over Saint Mary's and Gonzaga in the WCC Standings.
MORAGA, Calif. - Jordan Qsar of the first-place Pepperdine baseball team hit two home runs, including a ninth-inning three run blast in the Waves' 12-8 loss at Saint Mary's on Sunday afternoon.
Even with the loss, the Waves (28-19, 16-8) hold a two-game lead over the Gaels (30-20, 14-10) and Gonzaga (25-21, 14-10) in the West Coast Conference standings with three games to play.
- Junior outfielder Jordan Qsar (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla HS) went 3-for-4 on the day with six RBI, including two home runs, one in the third and one in the ninth. He finished the weekend 5-for-13 with three home runs.
- Junior outfielder Matthew Kanfer (Playa del Ray, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) also went 3-for-4 on the day, completing his impressive weekend in which he went 4-for-9 with two home runs, including a grand slam.
- Freshman infielder Billy Cook (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer HS) entered the game in the seventh inning and went 2-for-2, including a lead off single and a run scored in the ninth inning.
The Waves jumped out to an early lead when Jordan Qsar homered in the first inning after a Matthew Kanfer single, giving Pepperdine a two-run lead. The lead was extended when Quincy McAfee hit a single, scoring Cory Wills from second. The Waves had a 3-0 lead after one half inning of play.
Pepperdine held the 3-0 lead until the fourth inning when the Gaels scored seven runs, helped by a grand slam from Jackson Thoreson. After four innings, the Gaels led 7-3.
The Waves got two more runs in the fifth inning, first off of a sacrifice fly from Kanfer. Qsar then stepped up to the plate and ripped a triple down the right field line, scoring Brandt Belk from first. Saint Mary's scored one more run in the bottom half of the fifth take an 8-5 lead.
The Gaels scored four more runs in the eighth, giving them a seven-run lead heading to the ninth.
Billy Cook led off the top of the ninth inning for the Waves, followed by a single from Kanfer. Qsar stepped into the box with runners on second and third with nobody out and hit a towering fly ball to right field, clearing the wall for a three-run home run, cutting the lead to four runs. The Waves got runners on first and second again, but a double play ended the ball game, giving the Gaels a 12-8 win.
The Waves are back in action on Tuesday for the final non-conference game of the year when they travel to San Luis Obispo to take on Cal Poly at 6 p.m.
