May 14, 2013
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Pepperdine fell behind early and could not claw back into the game, dropping a 3-1 non-conference road decision to Long Beach State on a pleasant Tuesday night at Blair Field. The Waves (24-24) drop the regular season series to the Dirtbags (25-25) in their final midweek game of the year.
Pepperdine managed just five hits in the contest and only two in the final four innings. Long Beach State took a 2-0 lead in the first and never surrendered it. The Waves scratched across a run in the fourth on an RBI single from Drew Hacker (Moorpark, Calif./Oaks Christian HS). The Dirtbags added an insurance run in the sixth and turned it over to a bullpen that allowed just one Wave to reach scoring position after the fifth inning.
Eric Karch (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) suffered the loss for Pepperdine in his second start in eight days against Long Beach State. Karch (5-5) allowed two runs off six hits and walked a pair in 3.0 innings.
Jackson McClelland (Beaumont, Calif./Redlands East Valley HS) was tough out of the bullpen for the Waves tossing 1.1 hitless innings with two strikeouts in relief of Matt Maurer (Medford, Ore/South Medford HS), who went 2.2 innings. Michael Swanner (Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) tossed a scoreless ninth with a strikeout.
Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) clubbed his 15th double of the year in the fifth inning for the Waves. The preseason All-WCC selection shares the team doubles lead with Bryan Langlois (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS). Langlois finished 1-for-2 with two walks.
Nick Sabo (3-3) collected the win for the Dirtbags going five innings allowing one unearned run off three hits.
Pepperdine returns to action Friday, May 17 when it travels to the Pacific Northwest for a West Coast Conference series against Portland. First pitch of game one against the Pilots is set for 3:00 p.m. at Joe Etzel Field.
