PORTLAND, Ore. – Pepperdine seized a 4-1 lead in game two at Portland Saturday in West Coast Conference play before heavy rain at Joe Etzel Field forced a halt to the contest. The two teams will resume the contest at 10:30 a.m. Sunday and then begin the series finale immediately following the completion of game two.
Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) leads the way for the Waves offensively, going 2-for-4 with an RBI double in the fourth. Righthander Corey Miller (Laguna Nigel, Calif./Serra HS) tossed 7.0 innings, allowing one run off five hits with four strikeouts.
Pepperdine scored a pair of runs in the second and fourth, while Portland scored its run in the home half of the fourth.
Meyer led off the second with a single, followed by a walk to Aaron Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS). Meyer scored on back-to-back wild pitches and Brown went to third on the second. Drew Hacker (Moorpark, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) brought Brown home on a suicide squeeze for a 2-0 lead.
Bryan Langolois (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) singled to center to leadoff the fourth, followed by Meyer’s RBI double to center. After a groundout by Brown, Meyer scored on an RBI single from Ranny Lowe (Granada Hills, Calif./Notre Dame HS).
Portland cut the gap to three runs in the bottom of the frame after a walk and wild pitch set up an RBI single from Cody Lenahan. The Pilots threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning when they loaded the bases with nobody out, but Miller induced three straight pop outs to end the threat.
Friday’s game one featured more than 90 minutes of rain delays and Joe Etzel field was tarped once again on Saturday, heading to the bottom of the eighth.
