MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team sits one game away from the West Coast Conference title and automatic bid to the NCAA regionals after riding a strong outing from junior right hander Jon Moscot to a 4-0 win over visiting San Diego Friday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.

The Waves (33-20, 15-7 WCC) struck first in the bottom of the second, as Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) hit a one-out single, and Floyd Given (Rohnert Park, Calif./Sacramento City College) followed with a double to put runners at first and second. Matt Forgatch (San Marino, Calif./Denison University) drew and intentional walk to load the bases for James Grandpre(Lancaster, Calif./Desert Christian HS). Grandpre put the ball in play to the second baseman, who flipped it to short to force Forgatch, but the relay throw was late and got away from the first baseman, allowing two runs the score and putting the Waves up 2-0 after two innings. That was more than enough for Moscot (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Cuesta College), who was ahead of hitters all day and went the distance for the win. He finished with a two-hit shutout, striking out nine and surrendering only one walk. Moscot set the Toreros (39-14, 14-8 WCC) down in order in five separate innings, including the first three.

San Diego starter Paul Sewald settled in after the second, scattering singles through the middle innings and holding the Waves' lead at two through six, but the Waves would chase him in the bottom of the seventh, in what would prove to be one of the strangest half innings of the season.

To start the bottom of the seventh, Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) hit a one-out double to the right field wall, and Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) followed with a walk that chased Sewald. The Toreros played the matchup and brought in a lefty who promptly went 3-0 to Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) and then hit him to load the bases. In came another pitcher to face Joe Sever(San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep), who hit a popup into foul territory right behind first base.

Torero first baseman Connor Joe made the catch and came up throwing to the plate to prevent Gelalich from tagging at third, but Vincej had already committed to advancing and was caught in a rundown between second and third. He managed to avoid a tag, and Gelalich scored to put the Waves up 3-0. The Toreros went back to the pen to bring in their fourth pitcher of the inning to face Tony Cooper (San Carlos, Calif./Canada College), who drew a two-out walk. Meyer then hit a one-hop bullet at the shortstop that hit him in the wrist and bounced into centerfield. However, the ball had clipped the base umpire, and by rule, runners were only able to advance one base, robbing Meyer of a second RBI and keeping the Waves' lead at 4-0 after seven complete. Moscot retired six of the final seven batters to complete the victory.

The Waves and Toreros square off in game two of the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
