STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 2 seed Pepperdine baseball team rode starting pitcher Jon Moscot's complete game to a 6-2 victory over the No. 3 seed Michigan State in game one of NCAA's Palo Alto Regional at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond.
The Waves (35-21), playing in their first NCAA regional since 2008, were led by Moscot (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Cuesta College) threw his sixth complete game of the season, striking out four and only allowing two runs and two walks.
On the game, head coach Steve Rodriguezsaid, "We got a couple lucky breaks with a ball that took a bad hop over the first basemen's head and an error, and the next thing you know we have guys on base, and get a key hit to score some runs. We were just very fortunate to capitalize on plays like that."
At the plate the Waves were led by a three-RBI performance from center fielder Matt Gelalich (La Verna, Calif./Bonita HS) and a 3-for-4 day from catcher Miles Silverstein (Calabasas, Calif./Calabasas HS).
On the bottom of his order's performance today, Rodriguez said, "In order to win championships, you have to have guys step up. It can't be the same guy every day."
In the top of the fourth, the Waves got on the board first. Designated hitter Matt Forgatch (San Marino, Calif./Denison University) led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Silverstein dropped an excellent bunt down the third base line that ended up going for a single, putting runners on the corners with no outs. Gelalich executed the safety squeeze bunt to score Forgatch from third, to give the Waves a 1-0 lead. Shortstop Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) sent the 1-0 pitch back up the middle, putting runners on the corners with one out. Third baseman Austin Davidson(Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) delivered the sacrifice fly to score Silverstein and give the Waves a 2-0 lead.
The Spartans (37-22), making their first NCAA appearance since 1979, got on in the top of the fifth, cashing in three straight two-out singles to pull to within one, 2-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Waves would string together a few hits and put the game away. Tony Cooper (San Carlos, Calif./Canada College) started the one-out rally with a single that took a nasty hop over the first baseman's head. Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) singled the first pitch he saw to right field to put two runners on for the Waves, and Floyd Given(Rohnert Park, Calif./Sacramento City College) loaded the bases on an error by the first baseman. Forgatch delivered an RBI single to left field to score Cooper and move everyone up a base. Silverstein drove in the second run of the inning with an 0-1 single to right field, to put the Waves up 4-2. The big blow of the inning, though, came when Gelalich drilled a full count fastball over the head of the right fielder to drive in two more runs and give the Waves a 6-2 lead. The next batter Vincej was hit by a pitch and that was the end of the day for the Spartans' starter, Tony Bucciferro. Left handed relief pitcher Jeff Kinley entered and was able to get the final two outs of the inning.
The Spartans answered in the top of the seventh, as they cashed in a leadoff double by the nine hitter Anthony Checky. He advanced to third on a ground out and came around to score on a sacrifice fly from John Martinez, but that was all the damage Moscot would allow, getting the final out on a groundout to third base and keeping the score at 6-2.
Moscot put up zeros in the top of the eighth and the ninth to finish the complete game.
The Waves return to action Saturday, June 2 at 6 p.m. against the winner of regional game two between the host No. 1 seed Stanford Cardinal and the No. 4 seed Fresno State Bulldogs.
