STANFORD, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team was able to put the pieces together just in time to save its season for another game, plating six runs in the top of the ninth, punctuated by a Matt Forgatch grand slam, to come from behind and beat Fresno State 8-5 Sunday at Stanford.
Waves' starter Corey Miller (Laguna Niguel, Calif./JSerra HS) battled through 5.1 innings and uncharacteristically sloppy defense, giving up five unearned runs on seven hits with no walks and striking out a pair. Miller was relieved by Aaron Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) and Michael Swanner (Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS), who combined to shut down the Fresno State bats for the last 3.2 innings.
The Bulldogs got on the board first in the bottom of the second as Kenneth Wise hit a bloop single into left field. However, an errant throw from left field allowed Wise to advance all the way to third base with no outs. Austin Wynns laid down the safety squeeze bunt back to Miller, coming off the mound, but he was unable to make the play and the run scored and Wynns reached first base safely. A sacrifice bunt advanced Wynns to second and a groundout moved him over to third. With two outs, Jordan Brink singled to left field to score Wynns for the second run in the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, Miller started out the inning with a strikeout, but allowed a hit and then the Bulldogs took advantage of two Waves' fielding errors to load the bases. Kenny Wise doubled to right center for a bases clearing double to put the Bulldogs ahead, 5-0.
The Waves finally got on the board in the top of the seventh as they began a one-out rally. Second baseman Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) and right fielder Tony Cooper (San Carlos, Calif./Canada College) hit back-to-back singles. With runners on the corners, first baseman Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) singled through the right side to drive in the Waves' first run. With the score 5-1, the left fielder Floyd Given (Rohnert Park, Calif./Sacramento City College) took the first pitch he saw up the middle to score Cooper and put the Waves within three, 5-2.
Brown threw up a zero in the bottom of the seventh and recorded a pair of outs in the eighth before giving way to Swanner, who threw one pitch and got a ground ball to get out of the inning with the score at 5-2 Bulldogs.
Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) led off the top of the ninth with a single through the right side, and Sever and Cooper followed with followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases. Meyer worked a bases loaded walk that put the score at 5-3 Bulldogs. Given hit the first pitch he saw into left field for a single to make the score 5-4 and bring Forgatch to the plate with the bases still loaded. Forgatch battled with Bulldog closer Taylor Garrison, getting ahead in the count at 3-1 and turning on a fastball, driving it out the park but just foul. Garrison came back with the same pitch, and Forgatch again jumped the yard, but this one stayed fair and gave the Waves their first lead of the day at 8-5.
Swanner worked around a two-out single in the ninth, but got Fresno State three hitter Aaron Judge on a fly ball to left field to secure the 8-5 win and keep the Waves alive in the regional. The loss eliminates Fresno State.
The Waves will be right back on the field at Stanford's Sunken Diamond, facing the host Cardinal in at 6 p.m. Sunday, June 3.
