Nov. 11, 2011
MALIBU, Calif. - In the first game of Pepperdine baseball's annual Blue and Orange World Series, the Orange team took game one by a score of 4-2 in seven innings on Friday. The Orange squad put three runs up on the board in the first inning, due in part to a two RBI double by redshirt senior Floyd Givenand the team never looked back.
Right hander Corey Miller (Laguna Niguel, Calif./J Serra HS) took the ball for the Blue squad and gave up singles to the first two Orange batters, Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) and Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS). In the third hole junior Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) punched another single up the middle and the speedy Gelalich came around from second to score and put the Orange squad up 1-0. Miller was able to get the first out on a Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) ground out. Senior David DiPaola (San Carlos, Calif./J Serra HS/Canada College) drew a walk in the next at bat and Floyd Given (Rohnert Park, Calif./Rancho Cotate HS/Sacramento City College) came to the plate. Given rocketed a double that scored two, to put the Orange squad up 3-0. Andrew Alvarez (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King HS) and Trevor McDonald(Costa Mesa, Calif./Estancia HS/Orange Coast College) would fly out to end the inning, but the Orange team took the early lead, 3-0.
Freshman Mat Snider (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos HS) took the ball for the Orange squad and looked strong in a one-two-three first inning as he got Ranny Lowe (Granada Hills, Calif./Notre Dame HS) to fly out to center and punched out Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) and Bryan Langlois(Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS).
In the top of the second Miller came out strong for the Blue team, striking out Quincy Quintero(Valencia, Calif./Valencia HS) for the first out. He then walked the next two batters, but was able to get Davidson to fly out to left for the second out. A walk to Sever came next, but Meyer lined out for the final out of the inning.
In the bottom of the second the Blue squad was able to get on the board, with freshman Aaron Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) reaching on an error by the second baseman. James Grandpre (Lancaster, Calif./Desert Christian) would draw a walk and just like that the Blue team had a runner in scoring position. Senior Tony Cooper (San Carlos, Calif./J Serra HS/Canada College) came through with a single and Brown scored from second to put the squad on the board, 3-1. Snider would get the next two out, but with two down Eric Karch (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) lined a single into the outfield for an RBI as Grandpre came around to score to bring the Blue team within one, 3-2. Snider would record the next out, and the Orange squad would take the 3-2 lead into the top of the third.
The third and fourth innings were quiet, as neither team was able to get on the scoreboard. Brown would come in in relief for the Blue team in the fourth inning.
Brown started off the fifth inning with a walk to Meyer, but struck out the next two in DiPaola and Given. With two outs he would walk Alvarez, hit McDonald and walk Quintero, to walk in a run. The Orange squad would get out of the inning with a 4-2 lead.
Freshman Alvarez would come in in relief of Snider in the fifth, getting the final two outs of the inning. With two outs in the 6th he gave way to lefty Brian McIlhenny (Scottsdale, Calif./Brophy Prep) who would finish things out for the Orange team with the 4-2 victory.
The Orange team was highlighted offensively by Gelalich, Davidson and Sever with two hits apiece and Given with two RBI.
On the Blue side Cooper led the way with two hits and one RBI, as Karch added a second RBI. Lowe and Ryan Van Amburg (Campbell, Calif./St. Francis HS) each had a hit in the loss.
The squads will get back out to the yard on Sunday (Nov. 13) at 1 p.m. for game two of the Fall series.
